Salvador is a great city to visit especially if you are interested in exploring the African diaspora. It’s known as the blackest city outside of Africa, and holds a lot of history with the transatlantic slave trade and the Portuguese. The main historic center Pelourinho is actually storied to be the first slave trading post in the Americas. The history of Africans and Afro Brazilians, run deep in the city through the culture, the cuisine and the religion. When you visit, you must try Rerestaurante Suzanna for authentic African/Portuguese/Indigenous flavors in the seafood moqueca.

Itacare, Brazil – up north in Brazil’s Bahia state.

Itacare is just south of Salvador and can be accessed by boat and bus (combined) from Salvador. The small fishing town is also know for yoga, surfing and beautiful beaches. Compared to the rest of Brazil, Itacare was calm and relaxing. Less hustle and bustle and less western tourists too. This was in 2014, so things may have shifted a little, but i found their to be a lot of friendly locals, great food spots and a less touristy vibe. The coast is lined with about 5 beautiful beaches (all walking distance to each other) and another one that can be accessed via a 40 minute- hour hike; crossing a stream, small waterfall and jungle like pathways, up and down; until you reach a breath-taking opening onto an isolated beach.

Itacare is great for relaxation and down time. I had already been travelling for 7 weeks, so it was a well welcomed holiday within a holiday.

If you want to take up a few daily activities you can purchase a set of yoga classes or surfing classes.

Since i was young and travelling i stayed in a hostel but there were also a number of cute family run hotels and I am sure now, a selection of Air BnBs.

Food was delicious with plenty of local spots to dine at for reasonable prices.

Itacare is one of my favourite places in the world and I cannot wait to go back one day

The Belmond Catarats is located in the National Parc and this is only one reason why you should stay there. Don’t care about the opening hours of the park. You can go every time you like to the falls. The rooms, the service, the restaurant and the pool was perfect. We had five great days in this hotel and we won’t miss any of these days.

Lençois is a small city of Bahia in Brazil. This is a city where you mainly stay to visit the “Chapada do diamantina” (Place full of rivers, waterfall and treks). If you love adventure then Lençois is the city for you and it also good solo travelers or groups. I recommend spending at least 2-3 days here. I stayed at Hostel Pousada Diamantina. I had great food at Cafe do Mato and liked to hang out at a bar called Fazendinha.

Vale do campão is another small city in Bahia, Brazil. I stayed at a hostel called Casa dos Gatos. It was typical as far as hostels go. I ate at a lot of different places but they were so local they do not have names lol. The culture of this city is very chill (underground, boheme). Be sure to visit the Fumaça and Riachinho waterfalls as an excursion. Also, just so you know there is very limited nightlife with just local and simple bars. (Nothing to satisfy a clubber).
