My time in Martinique was beyond amazing. I stayed in an Airbnb that was about 10 mins drive from the main city portion but it was near a private type beach. Our Airbnb host was amazing he was so friendly and did pick ups and drop offs for us as we explored the island and even recommend things to do. This is a French/Dutch speaking island so would keep that in mind when communicating with the locals. There were some people that knew English but not a lot that we encountered. Everything was fairly affordable nothing e The great this is we got like a two for one visiting. There is a ferry that goes over to Guadeloupe and we did a day trip there. BETA TEST
If there is one island where you will feel comfortable it’s in Martinique (and in the whole Caribbean area).
Having grown up there, I can reassure you: we are renowned for our hospitality and friendliness.
85% of the population is black so there is no need to worry.
Martinique is full of rich history in regards to it’s relationship to the slave trade, sugar cane, bananas, and of course rum.
Each day I spent on the island consisted of visiting one corner of the island for it’s beach, rum factory, and some historical aspect.
In the most touristy area which is Les Trois-Ilets you must visit the home of Josephine Bonaparte and take the guided tour before heading up the road to grabbing something to eat in a restaurant located near the hotels.
The Saint James Rum Distillerie and the restaurant right next door are a must see as well. Further down a rather difficult road is the Banana museum which was an incredibly beautiful and informational place to visit.
Martinique is definitely a couple’s vacation spot where you’ll spend a lot of lovely time driving around the island in awe of all the beautiful views.
I’m going to talk about Martinique, (a French island) because it’s my island.
First I recommend to go there in the summer. You can go anytime but it’s better and hot.
You have several beaches like “Plage des Salines”, “PLage du PLM”, ” l’anse noir “, you can see dolphins, turtles and others. You can’t see them in every beaches so make sure to search before going ( the one I go to it’s ” Anse dufour”). The best part for tourists it’s the FOOD ?, it’s delicious like almost every Caribbean Island so make sure to eat local food, you will not be disappointed.
Martinique is also a place to go if you like history, with all the memorials to the slaves in every “cities ” or a volcano called ” Montagne Pelée”, know for his eruption in 1902.
So reserved a flight with your family and go !
I almost forgot, there are a lot of rivers, you can go there for the day (of course it’s free) and if you like adventure there are also things for you. And don’t forget to go to the rhum factory.
Ps: rent a car it’s better, and cheaper!
Visiting Martinique was the best birthday trip that I could’ve ever possibly have taken.

In the Diamante area, you must visit Diamond Rock and of course Cap 110 which is a sculpture in memorial to the slaves that died in a sinking slave ship.

Although the waters are a bit rough at the beach, Restaurant Le Point de Vue is a very romantic place to have dinner and watch the sunset.

Although not an extremely active trip, it was very relaxing. We were living the island life for the weekend and less as tourists would. If you plan to visit Martinique – Fort De France is the easiest part of the island to get around. The other areas will require you to have a car or driver. There are plenty of restaurants, but you have to remember they close after lunch And do not reopen until early evening for dinner. (You definitely need to plan accordingly).
This is an expensive island! Transportation being one of the highest expenses. Average meal cost for two people $50-$65. I do recommend this island for families with young children and couples. You will not have as much of the hustle and bustle as some of the larger/more active islands. Be prepared to spend your time relaxing!
