Chile is probably my worst travel experience ever, but I still try not to let that mar me from the entire country or from ever going back. Sometimes, things just don’t go as planned. My trip to Santiago was a case of this. I went with two other girls (usually I travel alone) and the result was being robbed 3 times and not being able to find even a shred of tasty food. I gave space because I am vegan and it can be hard in South America as a vegan, but my two travel partners were not even vegetarian and I can’t say any of us were ever satisfied with any we ate. We even asked the police to recommend the best restaurant and it was a huge disappointment. I’m sure there are nice things to do and nice people and better experience here, but of all the places to visit in the world, or even in South America, I’d say that Chile can stay somewhere at the bottom of the list. The culture was unfriendly, the energy was ominous, and you really do need to be extra cognizant of your surroundings. (And I say this as a Jamaican!) 10/10 Do not recommend lol.
I went to Santiago in 2015, in a family vacation and our first international trip. We got an apartment on booking for 4 days. We didnt really know what to expect about being Black and travelling to Chile. Although we are Brazilians and it is a pretty popular destination for tourists from my country, we were concerned due to the fact Chile did not have Black people as part of their Historical Society. However, it was completely over our expactattions. Not only we did not experience any sort of issue, we also found out that there were many Black people migrating from countries like Haiti and they were being enable to built their lifes in their new country.
It was my first international vacation I loved how they welcomed me the local people are really friendly I stayed at W Santiago it’s a great hotel its a bit expensive but its worth it ,I felt safe I didnt even have one cop asking me to show them my passport it’s a grate place i highly recommend you visit parque araucano it’s a park that you can have a picnic and please go paragliding over the dunes of vina the view its breathtaking,I will definitely go back to Santiago
The food here was so yummy! The wine here was to die for. The end. lol. I literally would’ve been happy just eating and drinking wine everyday but in all seriousness, it’s a city full of so much life. It’s extremely modernized with tons to do. My friends and I took a tour to the surrounding cities of Vina del Mar and Valparaiso, which were great add-ons to our experience. On the way back, we stopped at a winery, Vina Indomita which I would also recommend!
Something we really enjoyed in Santiago was our trek to San Cristobal Hill. We rode up on the funicular de Santiago and hiked down, only to see the most beautiful sunset I’ve every seen in my life. It was easily the highlight of my trip.
There is plenty to do with something for everyone!
Santiago is incredible, a city full of history, shopping centers, crafts and many delicious wines. The scenery is incredible, a town surrounded by the Cordilleras!
The cost benefit is
very good and an easy city to move with public transport.

Costanera Center (the bigets tower of South american).
I recommend you to drink PISCO SOUER every night.
What makes Santiago wonderful is it’s diversity of unique neighborhoods. I stayed in the Bellavista neighborhood which is full of live music, bars, nightlife, and a bohemian vibe. College students come to this neighborhood to unwind and the area has a youthful feel. All the homes in the neighborhood are colorful and it is safe to walk at night. Other attractions in Bellavista include the home of renowned Chilean Poet Pablo Neruda and Cerro San Cristobal, a beautiful hill with spectacular views of the city. Stay at the Rado Boutique Hostel if you want to be in the middle of all the fun and action in Bellavista. Another cool neighborhood is Lastarria. Lastarria has a European vibe with cobblestone streets, trendy restaurants and the best coffee in town. The best part about Lastarria is that it is close to the must see historic attractions of downtown area (Plaza de Armas, La Moneda Palace and Mercado Central) without the noise and crowds. Further east is the Vitacura neighborhood. Vitacura is considered the Beverly Hills of Santiago, with its posh restaurants upscale shopping and five star hotels. Vitacura is close to the Costanera Center, which houses the tallest building and highest observation deck in South America. Another trendy European style neighborhood is Barrio Italia. Barrio Italia is full of restaurants that are perfect for brunch. To experience Santiago like a local, La Vega Central market is an interesting place to get a sense of the city’s thriving food scene. Overall, Santiago is a clean, safe and lively city. It is perfect for a solo (and Black) traveler because the people are very friendly. I found that most locals were happy to find that I was a traveler since this place is often unfairly overlooked for more popular destinations like Buenos Aires, Rio, or Cuzco.
I had a little bit of Spanish under my belt, but was a bit rusty. Ordering food was a bit difficult when checking out the hidden gems. So if Spanish is not your thing, make sure you have your translator app handy! Overall I really enjoyed the food and drinks! The empanadas were delicious!! Anything you have is greatly paired with Chilean wine! I love seafood and had some wonderful shrimp and crab. Depending on where you go, you may spend what you would for a lunch or dinner in the United States, but there are also many restaurants that you can get a nice meal under $10! Don’t be scared of street food, they appeared to be clean and the foods I tasted were delicious!
I choose to go to SCL because the flights were wide open (work for AA). So it was very last minute. Used Award points to stay at the Marriott with was VERY nice. I was there for about 30 hours. Transportation is great there, they have this Hop on Hop off tour bus that takes Allllll over the city. Got off to take a cable ride to the top of the mountains and got to see the entire city! The next day took a personal tour guide to Vina Del Mar and to a couple of different Vinyards . The seafood is amazing! Can’t really remember the name of all the places now but I’ll edit later!
Santiago is a fun place. Knowing some of the locals did help and thus having a backyard bbq was a fun experience.
Similar to Argentina great wine and steak so you cannot go wrong in that department.
I had a great opportunity to go into the Andes and views on the mountain and from the city are simply amazing.
I loved Chile. It’s a beautiful country that offers so much to a traveler. On arriving we did a walking tour with Spicy Chile. We walked all over Santiago and we loved it. We went from the parliament to the square and everywhere in between. You should do this walking tour.
Afterwards we went to the desert in Atacama and even this was an experience that should not be missed. After three days treking the desert from Chile into Bolivia we came back to Santiago and did a few more excursions.
First we went to Cajon del Maipo which you teally must do. Then we booked a wine tour in one of the vineyards in Santiago which was a highlight in the trip. We did a tour of the vineyard, the winery and did some wine tasting. We then got a bottle of excellent wine at the end to take home. The food in Chile was fantastic. Theres really so much to do un Chile and we barely scratched the surface but this was a great introduction.
