Sofia, Bulgaria is pretty awesome and is such a hidden gem. It’s so affordable that your money seems LONG long. I used to travel there for work and would always return with tons of goodies and treats from my shopping excursions. I ski’d for the first time on beautiful slopes with full gear, instructions etc for $60USD! And followed the experience up with a visit to thermal hot springs for a soak that may have cost $20USD. The city has so much culture and is beautiful. If you are a nature adventurer, this place has beautiful hiking trails and waterfalls. The food and restaurant experiences are top tier and did I mention CHEAP? Now will the ppl stare a little of course, but everyone is usually very pleasant. It’s also a good place for medical tourism. From invasive to non-invasive skin treatments, you’ll pay a fraction of the price paid in the US. Check out Bellisimo Spa. Lastly, did I mention I stumbled across a local drink called rakia that will get you going? It’s a fruit brandy but strong af! Happy travels and enjoy!

One of the cheapest countries I have been to in Europe. An apartment near Vitosha Blvd was about 43 euro per night for 3 people. It was a central location and in walking distance to shops, restaurants and things to see. Sofia has some great FREE walking tours to get to know the city. Additionally, there is a FREE food tour which was a first for me to experience and it was great. Besides Sofia, the city Plovdiv is a great place to visit for 1-2 days. Plovdiv is the second-largest city in the country and was named the European Capital of Culture.

Fly into Sofia but continue to Bansko. You will find a beautiful Bulgarian village. Went for a ski weekend and it was by far one of the least expensive ski weekends. Euro or dollar is almost doubled.
Food and drinks were amazing and totally affordable. Ski rentals, lessons, and lifts were inexpensive.

I didn’t find much to do. Luckily, I stayed at a hostel so they had suggestions. There’s a free walking tour offered; just google “free walking tour Sofia”. People are quite friendly. I went on a pub crawl from my hostel, Hostel Mostel, which was much fun. Lodging is very inexpensive; it cost about US$9 per night and included breakfast and dinner with beer. If you have the time, I’d recommend looking into tours to other cities near by as you can cover Sofia in a couple of days
