    Things To Do

Are you in Amsterdam? Go visit Volendam! Volendam is a Dutch village about 25 minutes away by bus from Amsterdam. A return ticket with the bus costs around 5 euros. Volendam is known for its unique architecture and wooden houses. The weather of The Netherlands isn’t always that nice. But a sunny day in Volendam would be tremendous!

Do you like fish? Try ‘Kibbeling’. This is a typical Dutch snack, made of deep tried coated cod fish. Because Volendam is at the coast of The Netherlands, you’ll get the freshest Kibbeling ever.

Rent a bike if you get the chance. We’ve rented a bike near the VVV point of Volendam. We paid 7,50 euros a bike, and we travelled the whole day by bike. Here they can suggest some bike routes, for you to see the most breathtaking countryside views. I hope you like the smell of farms though!

Bike to a smaller city nearby, Edam. Edam is known for one of the most famous Dutch cheeses. Some spare time left? Visit the cheese factory in Edam.

Take a boat from the harbor of Volendam to the small Dutch island of Marken and have some time to wander and zone off. Ever had a Dutch pancake? Try some at the restaurant right across the boarding point. I had a pancake with Nutella and Rum Raisin. Recommended!! Take some amazing shots of the traditional wooden Dutch buildings and have a drink at the pier.

As a black traveler, I was surprised by the reception of the inhabitants of Volendam. People were continuously greeting, which was super nice. In Amsterdam, people do not even notice you. But in Volendam they really make you feel welcome, al be it with a simple ‘hello’.

All by all: Laid back, stunning architecture, fresh fish and exploring by bike.
