I went to the Mexican state of Yucatan while I was staying in Tulum. It’s a 3-hour drive to get up north and you can only reach it by car. I left Tulum in the morning and came back at 9pm so you can definitely make it in one day or two if you don’t want to rush things. I was attracted to Yucatan for its history. There is the well known Chitzen Itza which is one of the 7 wonders in the world but also the Rio Lagartos national park where you can find flamingos and alligators. If you happen to have time there is an organised tour that can take you to see the animals with a small boat. I went straight to las Coloradas an amazing pink lake. You’ll need to check before hand as the lake is not always pink due to the salt variation and they often close the site for works. I also stopped to Valladolid, and was impressed by the colonial buildings that are still there such as the Bernardino Covent and the San gervasio cathedral. I would definitely recommend to take a day-off in Tulum or Cancun and visit Yucatan.
