    Esplanade Zagreb

LOVED everything about this hotel. It’s old warm charm with modern amenities and 5 star service. It has FABULOUS restaurants and bars. Lovely outdoor spaces. The rooms are huge and kept spotless by a very attentive staff. This is a pet friendly hotel and they treated our dogs like they were welcome guests as well, including a Pet Room Service menu. I’ve stayed here 3 times and can’t wait to go back!

Croatia was a beautiful surprise as a Black Traveler. I visited Dubrovnik, Zagreb, and Plitvice Lakes. I felt safe as a solo Black Female traveler. My favorite part of the trip was Plitvice Lakes and the Museum of Broken Relationships which was VERY interesting. If you have time I would definitely check that museum out.

Pro tip: Tours from Zagreb to Plitvice Lakes are very pricey but you can literally take a nice Coach bus yourself and pay a few dollars and have a really enjoyable time at your own pace. Arrive early and you can beat the crowds also.

Zagreb is the capital city of Croatia, we’d spent 4 days in the south in Dubrovnik and then 2 days up North in Zagreb. Because it’s further North and in land, it’s cooler than the coast which is more Mediterranean. We were there in August 2021. We stayed at the Esplanade Zagreb Hotel, it’s a historic landmark and many diplomats and celebs have stayed there. Very stately rooms, 3 great restaurants and a great lounge bar with live music. It’s walking distance to city center.
We did a Zagreb Night City walking tour, which was great, it gave the history of the city and some great nightime views.
Zagreb has a great night life, as you move from city center, there are these offshoot roads and there is pretty much anything you want to do. It reminded me a lot of Amsterdam. There are all sorts of foods. One night we had authentic Greek Food and Gelato for dessert. Another night we ordered room service from the hotel.
The landmarks of the city are all very close by and our hotel was right near the botanical garden.
Zagreb is also very close to Slovenia, where we went on a private day tour.
Very diverse, safe, reasonably priced, takes the Euro or the Croatian Currency and the food is really good.

I agree with the sentiment of the other reviewer. I found Zagreb a bit disappointing. I only had one day there, but in that day (really 2 hrs) I was able to see all the city highlights.

First where I stayed: Hostel Choice. They offered free pick up and drop off from the airport which was super important for me since i was there for a night. It was only €20 for the night. This hostel is a bit far from town, so I’d recommend staying closer to the city. However, this hostel was actually really nice and my favorite part was how clean and spacious the bathrooms were.

What did I see: the cathedral, the Dolac market, stone gate, and the art pavilion…which was pretty much what the city had to offer. There’s a pretty awesome view of the cathedral if you go past the stone gate and go to another church parking lot.

The people were generally nice but there’s not really much else to the city. If you have a long layover i recommend going out to see it, but now making it an actual destination.

I was very much disappointment with Zagreb, there’s really nothing special that stands out about this city, it lacks personality compared to the other cities in Croatia. In terms of finding things to do, there’s really not that much to do other than go shopping but I wasn’t here to shop. I stayed here 2 days to before heading to Split and Hvar, I originally planned to stay one night but extended it to two days mainly because of the hostel where I staying was quite fancy with it’s very own pool and 2 bars. If you’re interested in the hostel, it is called Swanky Mint Hostel, very clean and affordable for the capital. The highlight of my stay here was the hostel.
