The ULTIMATE BLACK TRAVEL GUIDE

The Challenges of Black Travel

One of the most underrepresented and ignored categories in travel, is that of Black Travel.  There is a willful exclusion of black people in the tourism industry. For example, consider your typical advertisements related to travel. In most cases, you will see white or fair skinned models in marketing materials but very infrequently will you see those with darker skin. Although people of color may patronize the very same businesses of their white counterparts, they are not given the same attention.

Travel is important.  Traveling is an opportunity to see the world, explore different cultures and learn more about yourself than you ever thought you could imagine. Black people deserve to be able to travel and have their needs met just like other demographics.

When 2000+ black travelers were asked “Why do you travel?” in our survey, our top responses was Mental Health.

58% Of Black Travelers surveyed travel to help maintain Mental Health

We know travel is fun but it is also meaningful, in particular for the Black community. Not only is it one of life’s greatest educators but black people use it for both emotional and psychological health.

It is Green Book Global’s ultimate vision, to inspire and empower black travelers to confidently explore the world. In order to help achieve this we have created the Ultimate Guide for Black Travel.  We will ensure that black people are well equipped for seeing all that this world has to offer.

What is the Black Travel Movement?

What is the Black Travel Movement?

The assumption for some is that black people do not travel. This could not be further from the truth. In fact, specifically African Americans, spend over $100 billion dollars in travel each year.  This is up from $64 billion dollars in just 4 years.

Despite this massive dollar spend how can the pervading narrative that black people do not travel still exist?  To better understand this, it requires the unraveling of the evolution of the Black Travel Movement.  To do this we have to look at 3 main areas:

1) The History: Where it Started – The concerns of Traveling While Black has been a topic of conversation in the black community for centuries. However, in the 1930’s, specifically in the United States, the Green Book was created to serve as the “Black Travel Bible”. This really helped to shape travel in the 1900’s for people of color.

2) The Modern-Day Movement – There has definitely been a shift in the black community in recent years to spend more time and money on travel.  Why? Who played a major role in this happening?  What triggered this?

3) The Impact – The voices of black people are slowly being elevated in the travel space and it is resulting in incremental changes within the travel industry.  Influencers, Black Social Media Pages, Black Tech etc. are all playing its role to ensure we have a seat at the table while also while making a table of our own.

All too often, “others” will love our music, our fashion, our creativity, our sexy, our culture, but don’t actually love black people. Because so many things about black culture transcend us, many destinations will have pre-conceived notions about black people.

Television, radio, and the internet feed into those notions. So, when someone with limited real-life interactions with black travelers has an encounter, the experience can range to one of curiosity to downright disrespect.  Therefore, we created a guide on 5 culture nuances you should be aware of when exploring the world.
