The Challenges of Black Travel<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

One of the most underrepresented and ignored categories in travel is that of Black Travel.  There is a willful exclusion of black travelers in the tourism industry. For example, consider your typical advertisements related to travel. In most cases, you will see white or fair-skinned models in marketing materials but very infrequently will you see those with darker skin. Although black travelers may patronize the very same businesses as their white counterparts, they are not given the same attention. 
 
Travel is important.  Traveling is an opportunity to see the world, explore different cultures, and learn more about yourself than you ever thought you could imagine. Black people deserve to be able to travel and have their needs met just like other demographics. 
 
When 2000+ black travelers were asked \u201cWhy do you travel?\u201d in our Black Travel Survey, our top response was Mental Health.

We know travel is fun but it is also meaningful, in particular for the Black community. Not only is it one of life\u2019s greatest educators but black people use it for both emotional and psychological health. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The assumption for some is that black people do not travel. This could not be further from the truth. In fact, black travelers, specifically African Americans, spend over $100 billion dollars in travel each year.  This is up from $64 billion dollars in just 4 years.  The major contributing factor to this is the Black Travel Movement. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is the Black Travel Movement? Despite this massive dollar spend how can the pervading narrative that black people do not travel still exist?  To better understand this, it requires the unraveling of the evolution of the Black Travel Movement.  To do this we have to look at 3 main areas: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

1) The History of Black Travel Movement: Where It<\/strong> Started – The concerns of Traveling While Black has been a topic of conversation in the black community for decades if not centuries. However, in the 1930s, specifically in the United States, the Green Book was created to serve as the \u201cBlack Travel Bible\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

2) <\/strong>T<\/strong>he Modern-Day Black Travel Movement <\/strong>\u2013 There has definitely been a shift in the black community in recent years to spend more time and money on travel.  Why? Who played a major role in this happening?  What caused the onset of this recent Black Travel Movement?  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

3) The Impact of the Black Travel Movement <\/strong>\u2013 The Black Travel Movement had no signs of slowing down.  Black travelers’ voices are being elevated and it is resulting in incremental changes within the travel industry.  Influencers, Black Travel Groups, Black Social Media Pages, Black Travel Tech, etc. are all playing their role to ensure we have a seat at the table while also making a table of our own. <\/p>\n\n\n

As a Black Traveler, it is an unfortunate reality that there are some destinations that will be more welcoming than others based on the color of your skin.    <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It becomes even more complex when you start to break out \u201cblack\u201d people as African American, African, Afro-Latinos, Afro-Europeans, Caribbean, etc.  Black people are not monolithic and when you start to consider these sub-groups it is undeniable that some are more welcomed than others. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just as there are great cities for Black Travelers there are also some ones that should be avoided.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We have actually created a Destination Search Tool that can help in picking cities based on the threat of racism. The travel tool summarizes thousands of Traveling While Black experiences for hundreds of destinations and outputs a set of ratings and scores. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Black Travel Survey & COVID Impact<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The COVID pandemic has been horrible on a global scale but it has really hit the black community quite hard. This pandemic has changed the way we will look at travel for the next decade. Because of this, it was important for Green Book Global to capture the voice of black travelers so as the travel industry is reshaped black travelers are kept in mind. We surveyed over 2000 black travelers and captured trends on all things travel including COVID.<\/p>\n\n\n
