We had a really nice time in the city and on the island. However, while in the city we ventured off the main road to the beach to take pictures. The area sign read “Public Beach Access”, but we passed it so we turned around and were greeted by Karen asking if we were lost! I told her we were not lost and she said she thought maybe we were looking for the casino because sometimes tourists come back there looking for it. I said no we weren’t looking for the casino we were going to the public beach access. She wanted to say more but we rolled up the window and proceeded to the beach public access where we were greeted by Ken standing on his front porch with his hands on his hips watching us. We parked, took pictures, and left. Very unwelcoming.

Traveling While Black
The “Big Bar On The Corner” is called The Dixie, very very racist staff. Owned by Joe and Enzo Lieghio, who actively discriminate against people of color. I grew up in this area, as a black person, I do not recommend traveling to Northern Michigan in general. People are (usually) too scared to throw slurs, however people will stare, whisper, point and giggle, staff at establishments will treat you poorly and there’s not much to do. It’s pretty to see but this area struggles terribly with the opiate pandemic and relies heavily on Jamaican’s with work visas to keep the economy going April-October. Everything practically closes November- March. Again, as a black person who lived here for 20 years, I do not recommend traveling here.

Traveling While Black
My husband and I stayed here for our honeymoon, to visit nearby places. We were discriminated at by a local bar where they at first didn’t want to serve us, the waitress had nothing but attitude, and tried to steal by debit card but I returned and got it back. We also only saw one other interracial couple there, let alone anyone not white. They got weird looks walking down the street, as did we. We didn’t know before we went it was bad, but my uncle did but didn’t want to spoil it for us in case it changed. I wouldn’t recommend going or if you do, use cash. And don’t go to the big bar on the corner, we wouldn’t even attempt that one. Read the Google reviews for more detail. I feel weird putting a rating for twb, not my place, but I wouldn’t recommend it.
