I flew into Amsterdam and took the train from the airport into the city. Due to difficulty finding an affordable accommodation in the city I stayed on the outskirts at an Air BnB. I would commute from that location into the city via local bus. Custom is to say good morning on entering the bus and to say goodbye and thank you on leaving. I had no issues while commuting or getting around the community. I booked tours from Amsterdam to go to other cities in the Netherlands. I felt safe on the tours and despite being on hyper alert, I was safe in the city. As I was travelling solo, I avoided the nightlife and am unable to comment on that. I was not brave enough to try the raw herring. The stroopwafel was good. I didn’t get a chance to try the Dutch Indonesian cuisine, but the Surinamese cuisine was okay. My booked tours came with river tours, so this is nice way to see the city. Walking and cycling are other alternatives. Be careful when crossing streets, especially bicycle lanes, as the cyclists pretty much have the right of way. If you can get out of the city and see the countryside.
