Deployed here from April 2016- January 2017. Absolutely loved the culture and vibes here! The local people of Catania were kind and gracious. With the ocean nearby the food was spectacular and adored all the seafood around. Traveled by car from Catania, to Siracusa, Taormina, Palermo and had an amazing time in every city! Even my airbnb host in which I rented a room from was sweet and made breakfast the majority of the time I stayed with her. I cannot wait to go back and I hope to have similar experiences. As a Young black woman, newly 21 at the time, I felt very safe, at any time of the day. I once got a flat tire and the Sicilian men on the street helped me with no questions asked, they just saw me in distress!

Messina, Sicily, Italy is very racist.
Entire country history and flag is racist. TL:DR version: Princess wanted to marry a Moor. Parents said no, so she cut off his head and planted garlic in it. This image is on their country’s flag and all over the place.

Image pottery of the Princess and Moor are everywhere. Even tho it’s the same pottery mold, but the colors are different, the price of the pottery with dark skin is 2x higher than the white skin.

Getting side-eyed and followed in stores & shops and not served at the same level of service as those of other skin colors. We were very disappointed.

Yes, lots of culture, lots of history, gorgeous architecture, beautiful churches/cathedrals, and the home of gelato… but wouldn’t hang out here for long periods of time.
