I might be a little biased because I went to school here but Athens is a great little city. I always felt welcome in the downtown area and the selection of restaurants is great whether you’re in the mood for bbq, soul food, tacos/burritos, sushi, etc. The Globe bar has a nice relaxed vibe. While Athens is a “small town” in GA I wouldn’t worry about discrimination… just go and enjoy yourself.
This place was truly amazing. I have heard things about racism but did not experience it past a look or question. The food was amazing I almost wanna go back just for the food. My favorite were the Gyros. You will also NEVER run out of things to do in this history rich place.
Currently living here, you will not see many other black people out and about. Especially in a group. However, overall, I don’t feel uncomfortable entering a store or eating in at any restaurant. Just feels a little lonely.
