Belize is a melting pot of cultures, which means that EVERYONE fits in and is represented (ESPECIALLY people of color). They have Kreole (Afro-Caribbean), Hispanic, Asian, Mennonite , Amish, Indian, Garifuna and more living in Belize. English is the primary language and everyone also speaks Kreole (Patois).
Food: Sunday Dinna (Rice and beans with your choice of meat and salad), Fried Chicken (Chinese style), meat pies (Dario’s) and of course Belikin Beer and Old Master or Caribbean Rum.
Safety: Dress down. Use a crossbody bag. Keep cameras and cell phones on your person when not in use. Taxis near hotels are safe, and there are plenty of rental car agencies (rec: Whip Rental Cars). Stay in the “tourist” areas late at night but on the islands, late night walking or golf cart driving are safe. If you wouldn’t do it on the Las Vegas Strip or in Times Square, don’t do it in Belize.
Cops: Drugs, including weed, can come with significant repercussions. Shady cops will arrest you and you’ll have to pay to “buy” your freedom.
Sights: Mayan Ruins (try the ones in the West of the country, then visit the caves! Rec: 5-Star Tours (ask for Aaron!)
Islands: all are beautiful! Rec: Caye Caulker for a more relaxing/authentic vibe. It has bars, clubs, restaurants, nice hotels and excursions & is cheaper than San Pedro. San Pedro is touristy. It’s beautiful and def has amenities if you’re looking for a more tourist/luxury vibe.

Traveling While Black
I really enjoyed Belize, especially Hopkins. It’s relaxing & the locals are pleasant. The food is great. Ground transportation can be expensive.
