Austin TX was an experience for me being from Delaware I always heard negative things about Texas for black people of they were going outside of the main cities once I arrived to the airport and stepped outside the air felt different I was nervous but I got over within 5 minutes and noticed they were very friendly people from the jump and most of the people I met down their wasn’t even from Texas at all I just so happen to be there during the SxSW Festival and seen a bunch of celebrities just casually walking around along 6th Street they was more fascinated in knowing I was from Delaware than me being fascinated about Texas the atmosphere is definitely friendly, I’m talking about I had endless conversations with all types of people from Seattle Washington to Wisconsin to South Dakota it was a bunch of intriguing things to do such as the couple boating they have a natural water holes such as Campbell’s Hole just outside of Austin you can go swimming they have the Weird Museum with a bunch of interesting things to look at the Food was Decent nothing really to major about it walking through the campus was cool but the nightlife is endless you can be outside all night with things to do
This place is super amazing 10/10 recommend !! The food was amazing the staff and everything was so accessible you’re literally downtown!!
I recently traveled to Austin, TX in July and stayed at the Cambria downtown Austin. The hotel was very nice and friendly. I walked the area to include a 15-minute walk to Whole Foods and felt comfortable. If you like tails, there is a beautiful trail at Lady Bird Lake which was walking distance from the hotel. You can rent paddle boards, kayaks, and motor boats to hang out on the lake.
Austin is amazing for a visit, especially on weekends when there are large events happening (ACL, SXSW, etc.). The food is amazing, there’s always a good barbecue place but El Arroyo and Maudie’s are amazing Tex-Mex. Bikkle is a really good Jamaican restaurant and Kerbey Lane is good for a nice breakfast or their amazing Kerbey Queso. 5610 Interstate Food Co. is also SO GOOD and has like 40 different restaurants in one building, kind of like a ghost kitchen vibe. (I recommend Vegan Bee).
Austin is generally safe for Black travelers, but be aware of aggressive drivers—tailgating, nonstop honking and open-carry are common, so consider rideshares or stick to major roads.
Austin TX is super fun. I spent several years here and had a pretty good experience. The nightlife and amount of things to do is limitless. The diversity could use some work but in general theres always a black person around and never felt like an outcast. People are also nice and friendly. City is fairly liberal too
Austin has incredible food. I would recommend Fresas, Bird Bird Biscuit (Black-owned) – https://www.birdbirdbiscuit.com/, and Josephines.
Austin is one of my fav cities pretty much because there is a lot to do in a small radius. There’s always something going on and the food is really good! Try out some of the food trucks that are pretty much everywhere. Casita Boriqua on Cesar Chavez has bomb Puerto Rican food, via 313 is my favorite pizza spot in Austin. They have both food trucks and restaurants. Check out Rainy street for lots of bars and food options. There’s usually live bands playing in a few of the bars. I prefer this over 6th street which also has a ton of bars but it’s a little more rowdy and the crowd is younger (I’m in my late 20s). Check out the graffiti park if you like street art. There’s also lakes to do water sports. Follow ig pages like youngblackaustin to find out what the black community is up to. There’s a good amount of black events that happen in Austin, but they’re not always broadcasted well.
Austin is a fun and green friendly city. It has so much relaxing feeling and no rush. The nightlife is really lit! You can walk blocks and bar hop. It’s also a college town so you will mix with college students.
Austin’s Bouldin Creek is really nice. You can do Kayaking in the AustinRiver.
Sixth Street is the night life area of Austin.
Austin is so unique! It’s the perfect blend of city and outdoor living. Downtown is great for bars and restaurants while South Congress is good for shopping. I reccomend driving out to Jacobs Well. It’s a natural well that is deep as hell and you basically jump into it. The water is freezing but its great for a thrill and a good Instagram pic.
