The first time I ever traveled to Dubrovnik was all the way back in 2014. There WERE NOT receptive to me as a black person. I almost felt singled out everywhere I went and the locals interacted with me as if I were an outcast or some sort of creature. The women were always more rude than the men. Just keeping it 100%! Also, sometimes certain establishments were slow to want to seat you or serve you for that matter. HOWEVER, I’ve been back now in 2018 and 2019 and it seems they’ve adapted either more of a liking or a more positive tolerance to black people. Maybe due to the amount of black tourists they’ve had more increasingly over the past 4 to 5 years. This is NOT to discourage anyone from going, because despite my first experience, after going back, it quickly has become one of my favorite places. It’s gorgeous. This is just to be transparent and let my bros and sis’s know what you could possibly still experience and what red flags to look for. But go and give it a try yourself! After all, we kings and queens thrive anywhere we go!
BEST food ever!
My first trip to Croatia ?? I had one of the best experiences with food.
My first stop was Pantural. The food was fresh, perfectly seasoned and service was great. Prices are a bit expensive, but worth the money.
Next stop was Lajk for breakfast, a little cafe off the main road in old town. Again, expensive but they sure can cook eggs and veggies. Being off the main road, means you don’t have as much foot traffic to worry about.
I had dinner at Orsan. While this was my least favorite meal, it was still delicious! The view of the yachts and the marina is amazing and the food is fresh. They have a good selection of wine and even different types of olive oils for you to try. It’s worth a visit if you’re in the part of town.
In summary, the Food in Dubrovnik has been one of my favorites. I love seafood so this is a perfect foodie destination.
Croatia! So I’ve travelled across Croatia and it is a very beautiful and welcoming country with amazing towns, foods, and plenty of things to do, below are my highlights.
Dubrovnik – I loved Dubrovnik, it is by far one of the most popular places to visit in Croatia and the filming location for a lot of GoT. Explore the town enclosed around the historic defensive walls but a word of warning, this can be super busy as a lot of cruise ships dock here and off load all their passengers. Spend the morning in Lokrum (an Island 30mins away) and come back to Dubrovnik in the late afternoon when its less busy.
Split – Explore the town of Split and the old square which is a focal point for restaurants and nightlife. They have some pretty amazing seafood here. Take an excursion to Krka Waterfalls and swim in the emerald waters or Plitvices Lakes (swimming not allowed here) but both are incredibly gorgeous.
Pula/Rovinj – Further North in Croatia and close to the Italian border lies Pula and Rovinj. These are less touristy spots so nice for people who don’t want crowds of tourists. The food is VERY Italian due to heavy Italian influence and a LOT of seafood, so if that is your kind of cuisine, you will not be disappointed. Rovinj offers daily boat services to Venice Italy if you feel like a quick stop in Italy too.
Opatija – A super small town in Northern Croatia, again the only tourists you’ll find here are actual Croatians on their summer vacations. The streets are beautiful, the beaches are gorgeous, the food is divine, you cannot go wrong with a visit here.
Traveling while black – I didn’t find this to be an issue generally in the larger more popular areas like Dubrovnik and Split, however in places like Opatija where they are not familiar with tourists from across the world, I found it attracted a lot of attention. Not in a negative way at all, it was a lot of curiosity and admiration, a lot of people – women and men a like would compliment my skin or my hair and tell me I’m beautiful. I never felt threatened at all or unsafe but you will certainly attract more attention in the smaller towns in Croatia.
I spent some time in Croatia while dancing with Princess Cruises and I was not ready for the beauty that awaited me. I had never heard of Croatia before I went and I had my very first cliff jumping experience in Dubrovnik! There is a lot of great shopping in the city and plenty of activities to participate. I also recommend the glass boat tour! I will say this 12 day cruise to the Mediterranean are about $839 per person but if you’re looking for an inexpensive way to travel or cruise, we should definitely link up!
