As a Black person traveling through Chesapeake, Virginia, I can’t help but feel cautious, especially when considering the city’s dark history and ongoing struggles with police brutality and discrimination. Chesapeake’s past is deeply rooted in the enslavement era, and even today, Black people still face racial profiling and unfair treatment from local authorities. It’s something we have to keep in mind when navigating the area.
That said, Chesapeake does have some historically significant Black neighborhoods that reflect the strength and resilience of our community. These areas, such as the Olde Towne district, are reminders of the Black families who have called this city home for generations, and the culture they’ve contributed to the area. While the city’s history may not always be easy to face, these neighborhoods stand as a testament to our heritage and survival.
If you’re visiting, there are some gems when it comes to food. I recommend checking out spots like Soul Food Bistro or The Crab Shack for a taste of comfort and culture. The food is a great way to connect with the local Black community, as well as a reminder that, despite the struggles, there’s always a place for us to enjoy and celebrate our culture.
So, while I do think we need to approach Chesapeake with caution and awareness, there’s also beauty in its history and the strength of its Black community. Keep your guard up, but also appreciate the good that can be found in the food, the culture, and the historical neighborhoods that remind us of where we’ve come from.
