Born and raised here. Been back a few times. As a predominantly black population of course being black is not going to dampen your trip. However, as with all foreign countries they will sniff you out and probably scrutinize you because you’re “not from here”. This is normal and I’ve experienced it even in the U.S. Even just one zip code away!
PRO TIP: Be skeptical and scrutinizing too. Put them on the defense.😉
Once Jamaicans warm up to you and you display a cool (confident but non-threatening) demeanor, you will have the time of your life. We are known to be a lively, warm, and inviting people. Outside of tourist locations expect the traditional and more conservative tone of society (typically religiously driven). Maybe not too LGBTQ+ friendly.
The economy is rough for the Everyman so don’t go around flashing your money or wearing too much expensive clothing with brand names and jewelry. Scammers and gang members love to see it coming. Avoid staring at people or performing “iryness” for attention. But do be iry at the bar.
Playing up Christianity might get you out of a jam, so brush up on your religious guilt tripping. 😆 Also, befriending an elderly church lady, local fisherman or “man who lives by the sea” is great idea.
Ladies, most of the men are not in love with you. They’re just bored, horny, and/ or hoping for a VISA. The women might have the same agenda but at least they’ll have ambition and reciprocate even after getting what they want.
Food here is still locally sourced and has that organically “fresh from the land/ sea taste”. I highly recommend trying curry crab, jerk pork FROM A JERK PAN, and rice and peas. Be adventurous with the food.
Local currency is the best way not to be targeted and not to lose value. So many other currencies collide in Jamaica so stick to local currency for the fairest rates.
Jamaican Patois is a loaner language from English so they will understand you far better than you understand them. No need to fake an accent. Just ask what something means if you’re not sure and if you can’t answer the same question from them, blame the Internet. They’ll look it up.
All in all, be yourself, enjoy yourself, and keep your wits about you.

Loved traveling there. The capital was beautiful and a lot of historical places you can visit to learn more about the countries’ history. 10/10 must go again

Traveling While Black
Kingston is not the safest place to visit, especially if you’re not traveling with known member who live in certain communities.
However, during my recent visit to the more uptown/suburban are of Kingston–New Kingston–, ibhad an amazing time visiting many historical sites.
New Kingston is great for travelers who are interested in Caribbean history, botanical gardens, and waterfront dining.
There are a few venues for nightlife, but not too much. This is the safest area that I would recommend anyone who is flying into Norman International Airpot to find accommodation.
Ensure to try out Usain Bolts restaurant in New Kingston! It’s called Tracks & Records. Try the jerk bbq wings :)
