It was very quiet and good for writers and artists like me to create. It’s the desert. There are not many black people in the city. No soul food, no vegetarian spots, no black product beauty stores. My family seemed to be the only black people. People would stare at us. People would walk in front of us to be served first, etc. I did find a maker space called Creative Space in the local library. I spent a lot of time with them. My family lived there for 6 months. Later, we relocated to Los Angeles.
