As I boarded the Delta flight to Louisville, Kentucky it suddenly hit me that this is my first time traveling alone with my dad. He has been an obsessed horse racing fan for decades but never made it to the Kentucky Derby, so I gifted him this bucket-list trip. He still cant stop talking about it, and even a non-horseracing lover like myself had to admit I enjoyed it more than I expected. I can only describe it as a must attend event and the best costume-party filled with the most diverse fun loving/friendly people.ohhhh and some horse racing happening too.
Our build-up to the Derby included the Jim Bean distillery tour, and the Muhammad Ali Center. Both did not disappoint and even left my dad, a bourbon and boxing fanatic, amazed at all the new things he learned.
If youre going for the Derby be sure to book early, all the good hotels sell out quickly.
Louisville Slugger Museum. Its a great museum in terms of showing how the bats are made and the history behind the Louisville Slugger itself, but in telling the story of baseball as well. It was also great to see black ball players honored such as Hank Aaron and Willie Mays. And speaking of Aaron, I especially loved that the museum has a big section dedicated to Aaron and his legacy. It acknowledges him as the TRUE home run king not Barry Bonds (nope, not petty right lol?).
