If you’ve never been it’s a must add if you want the boogie and luxury side of China. It is also an island attached to mainland China and is a (SAR) which is Special Administrative Region. This means that it has its own currency and flag but they split governing laws with mainland China. The VISA requirements are also different. As an American, you can get a 30 Day VISA on arrival.
Transportation
From the Airport you can catch a free shuttle to a hotel close to your hotel or catch a taxi which may cost anywhere from 10-20 USD. While there the smart mode of transportation is the bus which goes around the island as cheap as 75 cents USD.
Food
Local food is plenty and super affordable be mindful of currency switch. The locals will definitely try to switch local currency for Hong Kong Dollar which is worth less and is not used in Hong Kong as fluently. A must try is the infamous egg tart. Margaret’s Cafe is the go to place. But Cantonese Food is the main food choice. And the local language is also Cantonese.
History
The Spanish deeply influenced the culture when they invaded. From street names to food. Even the architecture and restaurants are heavily Portuguese.
Things to Do
Have you ever seen a Panda in real life? Well I had not either but was able to hop on the bus and go to the zoo and see 2 Giant Pandas and several other animals to include flamingos.
Another favorite is the Casino. The Venetian is the largest casino in the world. But it’s a pretty local atmosphere. No alcohol served, and a lot log local games at the card tables. The most insulting thing to me was the poker buying at $500 USD and that was the cheapest. No one starts that high not even on the cruise ships. The locals also cater to the local men and will literally look you over to give them their fullest attention. Women are definitely second citizens and not really looked upon as the one that holds the wallet. Insulting at best
Lodging
Hotels are pretty expensive average $100/night. I stayed at the Royal Macau. center of the city. Easy access to the bus lines, gardens, and local food. You can get currency change at most casino atms, from desk at hotel. They are also good at helping with taxi rides and communication if you choose that mode. It’s pretty scenic so walking is an option. Be mindful it is a very hilly city.
