Martha’s Vineyard is one of my favorite places. The island is very peaceful. Theres never any serious danger or issues with racism. Everyone is usually very pleasant. Getting there is pretty simple. You can take the ferry over to Vineyard Haven or Oaks Bluff, which is one of the main areas to visit with plenty of things to do and eat. Circuit Ave is mostly where you’ll find everything( bars ,restaurants, shopping). For food, Linda Jeans is great for breakfast. One of my favorite spots is Midnight Taco(the jerk chicken tacos are my favorite). Next up is Ronnie’s which i think has the best burgers on the island. Then there’s a banging pizza shop called Giordano’s. For sweets you will find numerous fudge and ice cream shops too but the best is Backdoor Donuts which stays open late with some of the best apple fritters I’ve ever eaten. Also along CIrcuit ave is where the nightlife happens. Each spot has different types of music depending on the night and some offer live music. My favorite is Circuit 11 where they play reggae dancehall and Afrobeats.
When it comes to activities the island offers jetski rentals , parasailing, scuba diving and mopeds. For beach life the historic Inkwell beach is a short walk from the ferry dock and is where you’ll find all the black people. State Beach is where you find the famous jaws bridge ,which jumping off is a right of passage so make sure you try it. Minemsha is a beach about 45minutes from Oaks Bluff. It offers an amazing sunset and you’ll find a lot of fresh seafood shops next door. All in all the island well worth it. The best time to go is between July 4th and Labor Day.
Martha’s Vineyard became my happy place after an old friend of mine invited me to join her & her family during their annual visit. Oak Bluffs is where OUR people stay & when I say summers in Oak Bluffs hit different, I mean they really do! There are so many cute things to do—Backdoor Donuts, lunch or dinner at Donavan’s, catch a movie at the old movie theater in town, a beach day at the iconic & historic Inkwell, mornings with the Inkwell Polar Bears, stroll along Circuit Avenue, listen to some of the world’s most renowned speakers take on the pulpit at Union Chapel, visit the Gingerbread Houses along the campground…there are so many amazing things to do & enjoy. You’ll see a plethora of OUR people during the summer months…heck you may even see Spike Lee riding his bike along the Inkwell like my family used to every summer.
Visited Martha’s Vineyard for the first time in June 2023. Overall if you are looking for a nice beach town destination this is the perfect place to go. HOWEVER if you are looking for other people of color during the summer time I would highly suggest going later in the summer (i.e late July or August). When I visited in mid June the beaches were empty and there were very few Black travelers. The seafood was very fresh, but don’t look for anything amazing. Went to Nancy’s Restaurant and ordered the fried shrimp. The shrimp was fresh, but not seasoned very well. The frozen drinks are great; definitely try the Dirty Banana.
