The BEST food! If you’re into basketball, you can’t go wrong with the Tigers and Grizzlies! Everyone was so hospitable and willing to answer any questions. Things are affordable and there are many attractions. Beale Street and Shelby Farms are also a must!
Wow Memphis! What started out as a trip to attend the Audacity Fest, turned out to be an experience rich in culture & history. Memphis, TN is the birthplace of blues & rock N roll (soul music performed by white people). It also had a substantial influence on soul, jazz and R&B: BEALE STREET!!!! The food is outstanding from the BBQ, soul food, Cajun cuisine & fried chicken joints, I was a complete foodie out there (YES, vegetarians, pescatarians & vegans can still get it in). Most significantly is the American history of Memphis being at the forefront of its tainted past with their support of the Confederacy, Jim Crow institutions and the last place Dr. Martin Luther King took a breath before he was assassinated. Memphis left me in awe of its resilience, purpose, and spirit. I left there more enriched mentally and 8 lbs heavier physically (smile).
Went to visit just for a quick getaway. Stopped by Dolphland(Young Dolph’s memorial) and DJ Envy’s car show. Super cool to see both as I’m a car person and Dolph is one of my favorite rappers. Also walked down Beale St which is full of history. The nerd in me wouldn’t allow me to just walk down and enjoy the drinks and music. I stopped at every historical location and read the history behind it full of pride for seeing all the perseverance that we as a people possess. I’ve visited as a child and saw all the historical black locations but it resonates more when you’re older and been thru some stuff. Stopped at these black-owned restaurants:
Cozy Corner-line was long and wrapped around the building inside and out the door. Line moved rather quickly but by the time we made it to the cashier they were out of the things we came for. What we did try (chicken wings)wasn’t bad but my bbq craving wasn’t fulfilled so I drove to another restaurant.
A&R-I’ll never go to another BBQ place in Memphis! This place was top tier. The cashier was nice and funny. She reminded me of my aunt and instantly felt like home. There was a very large selection of items to choose from and I got turkey, brisket, potato salad, beans, key lime pie, peach cobbler and BABBYYY I was full as a tick. Great quality, great hospitality.
SugaShack-On Sundays we all know after church we EAT! Well this is the place to EAT ON A SUNDAY. Everything Big Mamma makes was here and her soul was left in this building. Chef’s kiss. I had greens, yams, mac and cheese, fried catfish, cornbread, and Nashville fried chicken. All of it was DELICIOUS

Memphis is where I went to college at and its a complicated city. Its mainly black people who like there and has a rich history and music, blues and especially rap. 3 6 mafia are from Memphis. The food is good, its famous for BBQ . But its not the safest city many gang problems and you better know which neighborhood to avoid especially at night. I grew up in a town an hour away from memphis called brownsville and i think black people can be our own worse enemies. I feel like many people are proud of their ignorance. When i was growing up my schools had white and black students but guess who i had the most issues out of and which were my friends. I had so many problems with black folks over stupid reasons from bullying and pettiness. I remember one time at lunch these girls were saying something to me and i was trying to ignore them then this girl pulled on my hair( i had a small afro). I got up and started chasing after her because i was done she was lucky we ran into a teacher. Another time i got into an a girl i cant remember what it was over but she cursed me out first then we yelling at each other. Even today i sometimes get petty remarks from black folks when im minding my business. I dont know why we act so surprised why we arent doing better as a people when we have to deal with ignorant ones who want to pick on their own while the white folks stick with each other. The reason I moved to Boston is because i was sick of ignorant foolish blk people who never even leave their town or state. Years later after HS i went down to visit mom and saw those 2 girls that gave me trouble they looked at me and laughed, i didnt say anything. i dont waste my energy on foolishness. We need to do better as a people, I cant blame white folks for everything because theres stupid blacks in our communities. I remember seeing on the news in NYC a few black folks attacking elderly asian people during the pandemic. Things like that are why we have bad stereotypes. Sorry for the rant, visit memphis just be careful
