I drove down with my family to go see some family/family friends and it is nice during the day. If you are heading towards Middleburg from Ocala at night for any reason DO NOT, and I mean this, do not stop for gas, a snack, anything until you hit keystone if it’s dark out. When you hit keystone you will be fine, but most places are sundown towns and if your gut doesn’t tell you, the people will with either the looks or their words. While driving down not make people mad on the road, and if they try to go around you, let them. This is an open carry state and most people own, and use guns regularly. When you go to gas stations make it quick, or try to fill up during the day if possible. Not all of Ocala is dangerous, but I wouldn’t take my chances. Even stopping during the day feels dangerous and I wouldn’t suggest it. While driving there I personally see a whole bunch of pastures, ranches, farms, and private land along the roads. Do not under any circumstances get out of the car at night or even during the day and try to step on their property. Not all of the people would do anything, but do not risk it regardless. If your car breaks down at night, lock the car, call an uber, and get where you need to be asap. This sounds like fear mongering, but I have had multiple encounters where I was getting either racially profiled or someone doing something racially motivated to me. Do not take any of the peoples words lightly, especially when they say don’t be seen at night. Ocala can be nice in certain areas, but do not get overly comfortable in the city.

When you go down the 49, and you see that big elementary school on the scenic route, you make a left to go on the sr200. Now, if you make a right, you better make a left after that bridge, because if you keep going down there Idk exactly where, but you will come across a little area with confederate flags, and driveways (that look like backroads). Marion Oaks is cool, though. Im from the tri- state so this was very unusual to see🤣. I was doing a doordash order, and that’s how I got there. So you gotta be very careful as a delivery driver.

I took a solo day trip to Ocala and stayed at the Country Inn off I-75 South. I had an amazing time. The staff and hostesses were great, and the room was nice.

Ocala was ok, typical FL town. There’s nothing special here, unless horses are your thing. There’s definitely a negative feel at the equestrian center

While I’ve lived here, it had pockets where you shouldn’t be after dark. For the most part you’ll do fine. Nightlife was not existent back then, so you’d find more to do in Gainesville or traveling to Orlando.

Traveling While Black
Avoid this city, got stuck in some sand on a sandy road. Two white guys stopped and told us we shouldn’t be there past night time. They were very helpful and helped us get unstuck. Also spoke to a lady at the Walmart that told us to stay away from the national park there because a lot of blacks go missing there.
