No problems traveling while Black in Providence, RI. I came up to attend a lecture at Congdon Street Baptist church, RI’s oldest Black church (dating back to the early 1800s), on Dr. Rudolph Fisher, the Black physician, author, musician, and all-around genius. He grew up in Providence, and they’re rightly proud of him.
I stayed at the Residence Inn Downtown, a Marriott hotel near the convention center. Downtown Providence is a walkable area, and I enjoyed a nice stroll, with stops at Cafe Nero and the Providence Athenaeum, from my hotel to the church. People I interacted with ranges from neutral to very friendly. I didn’t feel as if I was treated differently because of my skin color.
Providence is a college town, so there were lots of people out and about. I felt safe.
I had a good dinner at Murphy’s Pub, across the street from my hotel.
The only negative interaction was with a rude driver who cut off and then flipped off, my Lyft driver.
The Providence airport, T.F. Green, is busy, but the security screening line moves fast. There’s a small Escape Lounge. Priority Pass is accepted. It’s small but the food is good and staff is friendly.
I recommend Providence, RI if you are interested in Black history, design (RI School of Design is here, as are galleries and museums), or academia.
