The island of Saint Martin consists of two small countries, Sint Maarten and Saint-Martin. The countries share an open border allowing citizens and tourists to move around freely. The island has a majority Black population that shares a history with the Dutch (Sint Maarten) and French (Saint-Martin). A great way to see the beauty of the island and learn about its history is by taking a day tour. As you plan your visit, be sure to take some time to stop by the beach near the airport to watch the planes come in; you can swim at this beach, but I don’t recommend it. It’s small, crowded, and has a strong current. If you want to plan a beach day, plan it at one of the larger beaches or take a day trip to Anguilla. Other things to do, visit the original Statue of Liberty on the French side, visit Fort Louis in Marigot, and try the food on both sides of the island. Tourism is the main source of revenue for the island, but don’t expect the same level of service you receive at most tourist destination. The people are kind and will take care of you, but they will take their time doing so. So always budget extra time when planning meals and any activity that requires someone to wait on you.
