I traveled to Aruba May 2018 with a group of 4 for my 35th birthday celebration. We stayed at the Hilton Aruba Caribbean Resort. Very nice rooms for the price point at the time. The beach connected multiple resorts and the pools were gorgeous. We took the complimentary bikes out one day for off-property exploring. It was definitely a nice amenity to have on-site. The location of the resort was great being in walking distance of many local restaurants given it is not all-inclusive.
We spent one day at De Palm Island. As many reviews state it is okay. The all-inclusive food and drinks are mid, but my husband did the banana boat, one of our group members did snorkeling, and I enjoyed the beach. It depends on what you are trying to get out of the day but it was cool.
Our favorite excursion were the UTVs through ABC Tours. It was AMAZING! Highly recommended. We got to see a lot of the island with our tour group and our guide was very friendly.
One of our favorite breakfast spots was Diana’s Pancakes Place. A quirky restaurant with salt and pepper shakers all over brought from tourists around the world. If it’s still there, the food and coffee were great.
It’s a beautiful country I got to knock off my bucket list and highly recommend. Locals were welcoming and very friendly.
Aruba is the “A” in the ABC Islands of Aruba, Bonaire, and Curaçao, the Dutch Caribbean — islands under the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Most speak Papiamento, Dutch, English, and Spanish.
With descendants from Africa and Europe, and within eyeshot of Venezuela, they have a multiracial, multicultural tapestry. However, it is very much skewed to cater to whites. And to be more specific, those from North America, Europe, and persons who are European descendants, particularly those from Venezuela and Argentina.
That being said, they like our money.
Aruba is expensive. It is not big. You can drive around it in one day. Our family has had a place on the island to visit since the early 1990s — so, a VERY LONG TIME. There has been enormous change with beachfront hotels, increased traffic, an overcrowded airport that desperately needs more expansion and efficiency, and ridiculous prices for goods/food.
The weather is GLORIOUS. There’s very little rain annually. Hurricanes aren’t an issue. The trade winds are lovely. But, it gets hot.
It is ‘safe’, by far, compared to other Caribbean destinations. (Never forget: Their police force received extremely bad press because Natalie Holloway was unalived there, and they were incompetent.)
2022 Aruba was an amazing experience. Very hot. I traveled with 2 other women. We felt very safe everywhere we went, even at night. Alot of cat calling from the locals but not aggressive. There’s plenty of shopping and Dining options. Got massages on the beach. Went parasailing. There were quite a bit of African American travelers so it didn’t feel awkward.
