    Traveling While Black

I traveled via boat to overnight at the Mystic Seaport Museum. We originally planned to stay for two nights but enjoyed the museum and the dock space so much that we added a third night.

I have not been to the museum for almost 20 years and the last time we visited there was a little incident with a staff member and the way he treated my 5 year old son. The museum staff and storytelling has drastically changed and improved since that visit.

Every talk and demonstration that we attended provided a full and wholistic view of what was happening for Black and Indigenous people during the 1800’s is the seafaring culture and industry. I learned so much.

Throughout the grounds one will find information on key POC who made a name for themselves whether that is in the oyster business or in other parts of the industry. Did you know it was a Black man who invented the Temple toggle which helped to improve the whaling industry?

The staff was welcoming and helpful. I really recommend it as a place to visit. Also, the town has amazing food and diverse visitors.
