We decided to travel to Vanuatu as a one week detour on our trip to Fiji because I was determined to see Melanesia in addition to Polynesia. Vanuatu was a breath of fresh air. Deeply infused with what appeared to be African traditions, there is a rich cultural heritage that is immediately apparent. We stayed on a beautiful beachside villa that had free transport to town each day and included all three meals if you were onsite for them. They also had local entertainment each night. We got to see fire dancers and traditional folkloric dance. The highlights of the trip for me were our a one day excursion to the outer island of Tanna to see the active volcano and our trips to the history museum, the waterfalls, blue lagoon and garden of Eden river on Efate.
