Rest areas along I-80 have been pretty decent. Iowa is redoing the rest areas and will incorporate history themes. Think that will be nice once completed.
Food options are so-so.
North Platte is a good (almost) midway stop from Illinois to Utah. We stayed at the Holiday Inn & Express. It’s right off the e-way. It was clean, the breakfast was decent (a little bit more variety than expected), and the workers were friendly. The pool is 24 hours and the lobby is very vibrant looking. They have a managers reception from 5 -7pm that we missed both times we stopped. We also ate at the normal fast food spots in town and didn’t encounter any “get out” vibes.
Restrooms stop in Eagle, Colorado located near the visitor center. It’s a little bit off the highway and there are food options and gas stations before you get to it. The restrooms are old and clean. A stop at the gas station was without any issue. Travel time is during the day.
Clean rest stop in Fruita, Colorado. Plenty of food options and a Starbucks next to it also. We stopped here on our way to and from Utah. We experienced no issues. I even got a smile from a passerby when I was leaving. It was daytime both stops. If you have 10 minutes to spare, walk across the parking lot to the Vietnam memorial.
We visited Dead Horse State Park. Workers at the visitors center were friendly. People
we encountered at the park were friendly, cordial, or ignored/avoided us. No one was rude though. The trails were easy to moderate. The main trails are paved. I was able to maneuver going off the trail onto rocks and uneven ground with use of a walking stick and minimal effort. The views are amazing and worth the $20 entrance fee for one vehicle. The restrooms were clean. Dead horse is actually 35 miles from Moab and worth the drive if visiting in Moab.
