I spent a few weeks traveling solo through the Middle East this summer and Egypt was hands down my favorite country. There are so many monuments, there is so much history and beauty in one place, and the people are generally warm and I felt comfortable and safe there. Just wanted to put a bug in your ear: DO NOT GO TO EGYPT WITHOUT a day trip to Aswan to visit the Nubians or spending a few days in Nubia. Visiting the Nubians and learning about Nubian culture was hands down THE BEST part of my trip. I felt safe, comfortable and was TREATED LIKE FAMILY!!! I spent 5 nights in a lovely Nubian guesthouse overlooking the Nile River in Aswan, Egypt. The Nubians were so excited to see me and were very warm and welcoming. I stayed at Wanos Kato guesthouse which is 100% Nubian owned and feels like a PALACE; I had a room with AC and a balcony and it was $30USD/night. Yes the weather was like 110-115F, but we did our activities early in the morning or in the afternoon. As a black woman solo traveling through various Middle Eastern countries and experiencing a level of racism and sexism, visiting Nubia was a breath of fresh air… I had the opportunity to visit two Nubian weddings, spent time with Nubian families, visited the Nubian Museum, visited various Nubian islands/villages, cruised the Nile River, dined at a Nubian themed restaurant known as King Jamaica and more. I also relaxed. Just wanted to put a bug in your ear: DO NOT GO TO EGYPT without a day trip to Aswan from Luxor, or a few days in Nubia. I was able to learn some truths about Egypt while visiting the Nubian Museum. It is said that the Nubians are very similar to the ancient Egyptians, as Egypt has been invaded by the Arabs, British, and French and their look has changed. Go find out for yourself though :-) I think more black people should visit Nubia!!! You will be so so welcome and enjoy the hospitality of these beautiful people who proudly identify as black!
Aswan is a beautiful place. The Nubian Museum was informative and insightful. I loved the food, the Nubian village, and riding the Ferry/Faluka across the Nile. We stayed at the Movenpick on Elephantine, Island. Excellent customer service, amazing food, clean, beautiful view of the Nile, and secure. #KemetStudyTour
I visited Aswan in early 2020 before the shutdown apart of a Nile River Cruise from Cairo to Aswan. We were only there for a day, but we got to do a city tour via horse and buggy (side note, they just go when they feel like it and that was disgusting), visit a mosque, we got to walk around the souk, drink tea on the street and do a little shopping before getting back on the cruise.
We booked through travelzoo and we traveled with another couple. So there were only 4 of us and our guide.
All of Egypt is very friendly to black people, we had no issues. There is always the “my brother, my sister” shouted at you to by their wares/goods and then when we did encounter actual Black Americans, we would reply “my real brother/sister” and say hello and see where they were from.
I cannot speak to nightlife or romance because we were only in the city for a few hours, but overall I recommend visiting Egypt.
Aswan was one of our must see places while in Egypt. Although Aswan isn’t a “vacationers” spot like Cairo Egypt, the monuments and artifacts that are exclusive to Aswan are life changing! You can find tour private tour guides who will pick you up from the airport and give you a day tour for about $100.00 this is much better than doing group tours. With group tours you’re stuck with a group and it can be kind of annoying if your picky like myself. I was able to see native black Egyptians in Aswan called Nubians who till this day have their own native language that is only spoken by their people. These people are our people! Often times them saying welcome home sister warmed my heart. If your in Egypt take the hour flight to Aswan and expierence these places! You won’t forget it! Feel free to message me on IG for any other questions.
