I recently travelled from Atlanta, GA to Bishopville SC and Columbia SC (late December 2025). I stayed at Cambria Hotel Columbia Vista near USC. Highway i20 was a safe route to travel. Bishopville SC is a very small rural town, not much to see, except The Pearl Fryar Topiary Garden. No hotels are available in Bishopville. The hotel in Columbia was in a great location and very nice. While in Columbia I visited Riverbanks Zoo & Garden. Great place to visit alone or with family.

Traveling While Black
Its the south. Always stay aware. I’ve lived in this town. Things were well, but there is the occasion where a Ken or Karen may test you (never happened to me, but has happened to others). Law enforcement is a piece of work. Most hotels are pretty good. Food is great! There is plenty of things to do for fun depending on what your looking to do! I recommend!

Traveling While Black
Columbia South Carolina is a beautiful city and capital. South Carolina is a red state but Columbia is so advanced and up to date with current events. There are several black businesses for you to visit with unique experiences. Centrally located to Charlotte, Charleston and Augusta so a quick drive is easy to see.
There are black owned pizza spots, seafood restaurants also must try Kiki famous chicken and waffles. On the weekends you can catch “soda city” which is for local vendors to sell and showcase items with a farmer market. “A peace of soul” vegan restaurant is so delicious and they use fresh produce from a local farmer. “Railroad BBQ” is another awesome bbq spot with history and flavor, you won’t be disappointed.
A cool experience is this black owned rage room (Bonus she is a Military veteran) called “Thrash The Smash Room”.
