I drove through Corning on my way to a camping trip and stopped at the the CITGO gas station on the corner where Route 67 turns from south to west and where it meets up with Route 62. Having previously done research on this town and seeing only 4 black people population, I went to the pump furthest away from anyone else, got out of my car, fueled up, got back in my car and got out. I did this on the return trip also. Being in a black group that does a lot of outdoors stuff, I often have to travel through places like this. I don’t go to their eating places, grocery stores and God forbid I have to get a part for my car or have it fixed. Do your research, if the black population is 3% or less, especially where the population is only a few thousand or less, proceed with caution. I would have gassed up somewhere else but Corning was a good midway point to avoid running low on gas when I would later be up in the mountains, and I didn’t feel my safety was in question right off the main road. I do need to get a travel partner though. At the end of the day this was not a bad experience to report on, just a call to do your research.
