Guatapè is definitely one of my favorite cities in Colombia. Located a little less than 2 hours from Medellín, there’s so much to do/see. There are plenty of farms, fresh fruit stands(we stopped for plenty) & local restaurants on the drive there. We went Glamping in a luxury bubble tent, a definite highlight to the trip. There they offered kayaking & other water activities. I highly suggest going paragliding there if you’re a thrill seeker. From the glamping site we took a tu-tu (local taxi) to the famous Rock of Guatapè. It’s nearly 700 steps up, but the view & experience was worth it. We also headed to the towns square where there are colorful buildings, a vibrant vibe, shops and food. Staying in Guatapè gave us more of a local feel and we loved every minute of it!
The number one activity is visiting Guatape Rock, a natural beauty formed million years ago. Locals told me it was underwater and that many other rock formations still are. The hike is worthy, definitely a work out, it’s a hike of 700 steps uphill, as you get to the top the view gets better and better. The town of Guatape is near Villa Zocalo a colorful town with colonia style arquitecture. As many tourist I did it as a day trip bit once there I wanted to stay. There’s a lake where you can take boat rides, they take you to different places and the view of the rock is amazing from there also, they can take the boat closer to the rock for pictures. They serve drinks and fun Colombian music to enjoy while exploring the lake
When visiting Colombia, Guatape (and specifically The Rock of Guatapé aka El Peñón de Guatapé) is a place that you MUST travel to… and yes, you must climb the rock to make the trip complete. From Medellin is a 2-hour bus.
Here is a little background about the rock and how to get there. Please keep in mind that there is a bus that will take you back to Medellin. I personally didn’t stay in the Guatape area. Also, I highly recommend taking a taxi to the town of Guatape. Its filled with beautiful and colorful homes.
