You are going to love this place. It’s a 2 hour drive from the airport which is only accessible via ferry. The ferry leaves from Angra dos Reis. People travel to hike Parrots Peak which is approximately 956 km high.
They also have hike/walks and lovely coastal beaches with restaurants, bars etc. Slaves were bought to the country via this islands gateway before they were taken to the mainland.
Our people who are part of the diaspora were quick to welcome me to their beautiful island. I bought quite a bit of handmade jewelry to support my sisters there and it was worth every penny.
The cuisine is steeped in traditional African & portequese ingredients and is so delicious I never missed a meal.
The plumbing is very old…which means when you poop you place the toilet paper in a garbage bag otherwise you could clog up the system. Oops
They call the places to stay posadas which serve breakfast and are very affordable.
Make sure you stay at a posada that has a/c because it gets quite hot there. Take a boat over to Parnaioca Beach and enjoy a peaceful swim.
During our winter months it’s steaming there so if you don’t like hot/humid and less tourist stay in July like I did.
