I went to Osaka on a solo trip. Always wanted to visit Japan and Osaka did not dissapoint. The food – amazing, the parks and temples – mind blowing. My favorite part was running into another black woman at a green tea ceremony I attended. We are everywhere and i love it!!!
As the only black person on the trains and wandering around Osaka & Kyoto I did not get many stares. I traveled outside of the usual tourist spots and even sitting in a little spot outside of town to eat lunch everyone was very accommodating. Traveling to the outskirts will attract stares but it’s really more curiosity than racism. I felt safe and really enjoyed myself.
I recommend learning a bit of Japanese. Just the basics so you can ask for directions and understand the answer and order food, etc. Some of the older folks act like they don’t understand you when you are speaking Japanese but other folks appreciate and are very excited when you speak the language.
The sushi, ramen, sake & whiskey were all phenomenal. If you like Asian cuisine you will have plenty to choose from. I truly enjoyed my stay and will be headed back to Tokyo with my brothers.
Unfortunately I only got to spend one night in Osaka before heading up to Tokyo but I got to walk around in the Dotonbori district. The food was amazing you have to try okonimayaki, takoyaki, kushikatsu, and of course sushi. You can also do a little shopping in that same area and see the Glico man sign.
I studied abroad in Osaka (Kyoto) back in 2002-2003, and then I returned again to my hometown in like 2012 i think it was. Osaka is such an untouched place of history and culture. It’s like the New York/New Jersey of Japan. Our Japanese accent is famous and well known… often hated on, but “we”/they are also known for their comedy in speech.
The Osaka castle is a favorite stop of most travelers here, but you could spend 3 days in Kyoto alone seeing all the temples. Kyoto was the original capital of Japan and escaped much of the devastation of the war.
The food here is AMAZING, and the bath-houses (onsen) are to die for! Make sure to hit a “Tabe-hodai” (all you can eat mBBQ meat spot! You spend a lot on train tickets around the town and be prepared to know some Japanese. This is NOT Tokyo. You will not find English menus.
