NOLA is known for it’s lively music scene - but, I enjoyed the nostalgic rides on the trolley car into the outer banks of the city to explore a new restaurant or just site see. The Spanish Moss Trees were captivating and hold so much history, it’s enough to just find a park or quiet spot to sit and enjoy a picnic or so. I’d recommend checking out a Tea Spot as well or visiting a museum. I felt relaxed in NOLA. It served its purpose in more ways than one, and I am grateful.
Orlando is the land of Fantasy & Fun. I stayed for short while actually on business but I was tempted by the array of activities, stores, restaurants and events there. What am I saying…..I worked 6 days a week and still managed to visit “The Fun Spot” which was a Carnival with a huge lit up Ferris Wheel, an Arcade and other rides you could pay for per-ride or with a day pass. I enjoyed - after a long day of doing people….just being able to do, Me. Universal Studios and Walt Disney were also right there, I didn’t get a chance to explore this time but the Hilton I stayed in had super two-for-one deals, free shuttle and concierge service support. I managed to watch Ava Duvernay’s “Origin” based on the book “Caste” by Black Female Author Isabel Wilkerson at the Disney AMC Theatres - there is a bar there with seated menu service where you can order food from the app - Nice Touch.
This is a great location for solo travel or a romantic getaway. I took a trip here with my friend per the recommendation of our resort (True Blue Bay) which was just 5 mins from the Maurice Bishop Airport. The main island of Grenada was so lovely, we decided to extend our stay and explore Carriacou, a nearby remote island for the weekend. We took a small charter plane courtesy of SVG Air and enjoyed a weekend there at Bougles Bed & Breakfast. Carriacou is full of rich Melanin with a humble ease to it that makes you feel a sense of timelessness. Pure in nature and loving, safe energy all around. I spent the day at Paradise Beach as well as did a full day tour with a Black Owned Tour Company - by Sherwyn *just as for him in town, that's how small and close knit it is. Everyone knows him. He owes us nothing!!! We island hopped on his boat, enjoying music and drinks. We snorkeled, swam, saw tropical fish and more. Lunch was Lobster, Veggies, Crab, Pasta Salad along with small bites that were sold by the locals. There was no rush. At all. I felt this same sense of timelessness at Paradise Beach. Travel Tip : Plan ahead for your transport, ask a friend or your concierge for support - as cabs/taxis run far and few. This was our last stop before flying back to mainland Grenada and truly was the highlight of our trip.
I met a woman on the boat trip who I'd become friends for life with. She and I are now business partners and I'm so grateful for our encounter. Carriacou has it's own Carnivale too. So check it out! Great Place to retreat for total and complete serenity.
Malindi is a Lovely - little beach town that's great for a scenic getaway. I flew in from Nairobi, Kenya for a destination wedding and truly enjoyed it. The food is amazingly fresh and abundant. The people are quiet and kind willing to be hospitable in any way. The beaches are wonderful - go for a dip, take a glass bottom boat trip, sail on a dhow, get a massage, or fly your kite near the water. The Sun is Bright and HOT! So stay shaded and wear sunscreen. You'll need to take a small regional plane to get here from Nairobi or Mombasa.
The highlight of my trip was the Airbnb experience. For a fraction of the cost that you see or get anywhere else bookings in Malindi tend to be a large house including a Chef, House Manager/Cleaner whereas you can simply buy groceries and they will prepare the meals for you and wash your clothes. Large houses tend to come with an Askare or Security Guard - they tend to be a bit of a distance from the main road so make an arrangement with a driver by hiring them for the length of your stay or grab a TukTuk, small go-cart-like vehicles that can zip you around town for errands, shopping or whatever.
Malindi has a lot of East-Africa charm for a quaint beach town. This is great for a timeless enjoyable family, couple, or even solo getaway. Culturally this location is perfect for Traveling While Black it's comprised mainly of Islamic Black Africans but you'll easily see Europeans from Italy, Spain, France, and the Dutch vacationing here *they tend to keep to themselves so this is nice.
The Spice Island is definitely for LOVERS. What’s nice is that Grenadians don’t crowd tourists like other destinations. They are extremely friendly, open, and social if engaged but are far from aggressive. You can tell that they have a true heart of servitude and want people to enjoy and have a good time. Visiting with my Lover Man, we were able to be playful and free on the beach enjoying our cocktails and the playing of music with our own speaker with problems. We were able to explore other beaches outside of our resort “True Blue Bay Resort” simply by signing in, taking a temperature and providing a photo copy of our vaccine card and ID. Everywhere you go the sites are beautiful, we often ran into other couples or families exploring the streets or shopping in the market. It was lovely. We had a spice demonstration that ignite your senses and pallet for what to cook back home. It was euphoric to say that least, a little shop called “Sugar and Spice.” All and All. We were satisfied and treated like Royalty if not a Close Cousin our Friend. Oh yea, and it helps to be BLACK!:)
Aruba is getting a mixed review here. I visited for a private group experience, a Yoga Retreat where we set our own itinerary however — If you’re Noord you’ll find plenty of water activities to embark upon there on the beach: Water/Jet Skis, Paragliding, Yatch Partying, Swimming/Tubbing, and etc. I’d say come early if you want the experience because activities book up quickly and you don’t want to miss out or waiting. I traveled during Pandemic and I could say that they things were even still pretty lively all over the island. If you’re a holistic, conscious, plant-based eating person you’ll enjoy their eateries, vegan menu options and places where which to relax getting a massage. There are some guiding walking trails so be sure to visit Airbnb Experiences to learn more. The nightlife is pretty lively also and depending on what hotel you’re staying there, local performances by descendants of the Native islanders take place. So ask your concierge!!! Talk to the Locals!!! Just about everyone there is kind, open, and communicative. Have a Great Time:)
