I don’t know how in the world Fort Worth is considered a “sundown town?” There is plenty of black people who live in Fort Worth and you don’t hear of any racist incidents. There’s the Fort Worth Stock Yards and they proudly show case the Cowboys of Color AND proudly promotes black businesses! They even shoot movies at the stockyards. Charleston White lives in Fort Worth and not one time has anyone ever heard him say that Fort Worth is a sundown town. Just because one person had an encounter doesn’t negate it as a sundown town, stop it.
I grew up some in Beaumont. Vidor is about 10-15 mins from Beaumont. If you’re traveling on I-10 from Houston to Atlanta or even New Orleans to Houston and vice versa and if you have to pass through Vidor, it’s no where near as racist as it used to be. There are plenty of black people who actually live in Vidor now. I’ve been there as recently as 1/6/25 and didn’t have any issues. No one was eyeballing me or made me feel uncomfortable. I’m sure there are still some racist who live there but they’re not about that life. I totally understand most still wanting to avoid this town but it’s not the same. I want my people to feel safe while traveling and if avoiding Vidor makes you feel comfortable, by all means do what’s best for you and yours.
