Augusta to me is a sleepy little town. Hard to believe it’s the capital of Maine bc Portland (the original capital) is so much bigger and vibrant. Been there a few times in the past 3 summers and never really see black people in stores or driving. Witnessed rowdy white locals with confederate flags and trvmp flags who did get rowdier upon seeing us. Lots of staring everywhere especially stores and including lodging as if it’s their first time seeing black people. Enough to feel uncomfortable so I’d recommend caution but by the Grace of God haven’t had any real issues.
Always stay at the Maine Evergreen Hotel. It’s a 2/3 star hotel and it’s older, but the staff is nice and even met the owner. They treat you with respect and an older bald white man who works concierge remembers everyone who’s been there by face!
Lastly, most places close early like 7-9pm early so you have to travel further for food or nightlife. Most places also are open on weekends but closed on Mondays and Tuesdays so keep in mind if you want to eat.
