Gee’s Bend, now known as Boykin, AL, hosts the annual Airing of the Quilts Festival in early October. It’s roughly 25 miles SW of Selma. The community is rural, quiet and it’s obvious they rely on the festival and their history as quilts makers.
The quilters hand down their talents to the next generation and they are off and running❗️ There’s an admission fee and if you desire to attend their classes you need to book/pay early. If you’re into textile arts or have a love of quilts.. go❗️
Have a full tank of gas; we didn’t see a station along our route.
Eat before you go; there are food trucks on site however I didn’t see a single restaurant along the county roads. Like us, many attendees were from out of state.
The day before the festival we drove to and spent the night in Demopolis, AL and stayed at Best Western. We ate at “A Slab and More BBQ”; food was very good 👍🏽
We didn’t see law enforcement while in Gee’s Bend however we didn’t see traffic lights until we left and rolled into Selma.
We spent the next night in Montgomery; good experience.
