Spent some time traveling across Burundi, located in East Africa. If you enjoy a slow-paced, tropical highland climate and if you’re a flora and fauna nerd, this is the perfect country.
I’m listing some of the most popular things to do, as Burundi is often overlooked as a tourist destination mostly due to its infrastructure and history. The country has been very peaceful recently and they are rebuilding society from a very dark past. I would suggest going after elections (May) to avoid any potential “risks”. Otherwise it was very very safe and I am planning to go back!
Language: French, Kirundi and English.
Currency: they accept USD dollars almost everywhere (try not to use large bills) and have ATMs close to hotels.
Accommodation: Club du Lac Tanganyika (literally on the banks of the lake (hippos will visit here every morning)
Accessibility: some bad roads, but it would be best to hire a driver and guide (hit me up for deets). Fly into capital Bujumbura.
Things to do/see:
– Tea Plantation
– Tanganyika Blue Bay Resort (I would suggest staying here 2 days)
– Bora Bora Beach Club
– Karera Waterfalls (must see)
– Lake Tanganyika
– Enjoy the local coffee, tea and fresh water fish the country offers!
