Cullman is overwhelmingly white, has a known & ugly history, and many accounts of recent discrimination. We visited a large antique flea market in town and they were selling nazi/racist paraphernalia masked as historical relics. This is not somewhere I want loved ones of color to spend any time or money.

Traveling While Black
Husband and I traveling from Dayton, Ohio to New Orleans, LA. Stopped in Huntsville, AL for gas (it was dark). We were warned by a white employee at that gas station that we should not stop again (especially since it is dark) until we get to Birmingham. She stated that we should absolutely under no circumstances stop in Cullman, AL as it is not safe for us. It is known to be very racist & a “sundown town”. We listened and did not stop. If a white person in Alabama is telling us to avoid a place, then I’m going to listen!

Cullman AL is a large southern town with a majority with and hispanic population. It has a history of being a sundown town but lately it has become more neutral. It is largely conservative and I certainly wouldn’t call it safe, but I don’t fear for my safety here as a local.

We stayed at the Comfort Inn and Suites in Cullman,AL and it wasn’t so bad being a sundown town. I must admit I did only see 2 other people of color at our hotel but the staff was very nice and friendly. But I did keep my head on a swivel when it got dark. But over all not any issues. Thank God!

Get gas and use the bathroom before and don’t stop until after. This is a sundown town. And a well known one. It’s not even safe for lgbtq white people. It’s worse if you are Black. Avoid at all cost.
