Da Lat is a choice and highly sought after destination in Vietnam. As a single, black, male, that actively seeks out the unknown (e.g. conversation opportunities, streets, classes/workshops, mountains, and hills) the locals are only friendly on the surface.
If you stay near your hotel/homestay, go after the tourist services, and are actively spending money you will have a wonderful time and be none the wiser of how people respond to you.
Outside of tourist areas, I have been groped, followed for long distances, and harassed by men; have had women scream theatrically at the sight of me, cross the street to avoid me, or try to solicit me as a sugar daddy. People will take your picture without permission, point you out to anyone that hasn’t seen you when they saw you, and children will have mixed reactions.
I lived and worked in Vietnam for 18 months. Only other dark skin travelers that have left the comfort of their hotels have shared similar experiences. Almost everyone else will downplay these occurrences and ignore that it is happening. I have had the validating experience to have gone on several dates with local women that remark about how the attention they receive in company makes even them uncomfortable and would not like to go out again.
To make the make most of Vietnam, be a tourist. Stay on the beaten path and you will love it.
Conversely, I have never had a side eye from the many ethnic minorities that live on the outskirts.
