    Traveling While Black

We took a morning flight from Quito to San Cristobal, one of the remote Galápagos Islands. Upon arrival, we boarded the luxurious Galápagos Legend for our 4-night cruise. We were given a welcome drink on arrival and had a very informative introduction of all the events and safety protocol. Upon reaching SAN CRISTOBAL, we visited the INTERPRETATION CENTER with our Naturalist and learned about what makes the archipelago so unique. The following morning, we walked to TIJERETAS HILL which brought us to a frigate bird nesting colony. We encountered so many black lava iguanas and seals. THEY DON’T MOVE out of your way.

Passengers are split into groups and have assigned a Naturalist for the duration of your trip. We had an excursion to Gardner Bay and Punta Suárez on ESPAÑOLA ISLAND, one of the oldest islands in the archipelago. Here, we saw the famous blowhole, as well as unique sea bird colonies, including the waved albatrosses (April-Dec.), Nazca and blue-footed boobies, and Darwin’s finches. We also, spotted red, green, and black marine iguanas and a rookery of sea lions right at the landing site.

The next day we went to FLOREANA ISLAND, for an excursion to Post Office Bay, where a wood barrel has served as an informal post office since 1793. It was so cool to write letters and find letters addressed to different places. HINT: write a postcard to yourself and have it addressed to you!!! Darwin’s finches, lava lizards, and green sea turtles can be found here. Later, at Cormorant Point, we walked to the brackish lagoon, home to a large flamingo population. Snorkeling from the beach provides a great opportunity to see reef fish, sea turtles, sea lions, and even white-tipped reef sharks! Occasionally, a small colony of penguins can also be seen on this island.

The next day, we took a journey into the highlands of SANTA CRUZ, where we saw giant tortoises endemic to the island roaming in the wild. That afternoon, we visit the CHARLES DARWIN RESEARCH STATION, established to help conserve the Galápagos’ natural habitats and the area’s famous giant tortoises. Don’t forget to spend time in Puerto Ayora before returning to the ship.

Our last day in the Galalpagos we snorkeled at Carrion Point on Santa Cruz to discover the beautiful marine life. We didn’t see much and the water was cold. But the experience was incredible nonetheless.
