Granada is an adventure in it of itself. Lol Very hilly, which actually surprised me, so brace yourself for a great workout. The Alhambra is a must see! Try to snag tickets months in advance. I’m serious about that. Lol It can be a challenge to get into. However, at night if you want a great view and to watch it illuminated while watching a live flamenco show (put on by the gypsies), go to Mirador De San Nicholas any given day between (5pm-7pm). I accidentally wound up in a cave restaurant Michelle Obama went to called : Cueva De La Rocio. It’s run by a famous Spanish, flamenco dancing family. They have a tv show apparently. Lol Also, hike up the Albacine. There are incredible views of the Sierra Nevada. It should not take you more than an hour or two. I did it by myself and really enjoyed it.
This is by far one of my favorite cities in the world. Being there transports you to a time in history very few know about. Visiting the Alhambra is an absolute must. When you book your tickets pay very close attention to your time slot to visit the Nasrid Palaces within the Alhambra. I don’t think it’s explained clearly enough that with your ticket you can enter the Alhambra complex but your time slot refers to the exact time you will be allowed to visit the Nasrid Palaces. If you’re not on the line to enter during your allotted slot, you will not be allowed in – and you most definitely do not want to make it all that way to miss the best part!
I toured the southern part of Spain and soaking up as much of the culture as I could. One of the most memorable things I did while in Granada was attend a flamenco show in Cueva la Rocío, located in the emblematic Sacromonte. It’s located in a cave that is transformed into a cultural Spanish fortress. The show is comprised of flamenco dancers and a live band who tell a passionate story through dance. It’s an intimate setting with loads of charm. The architectecture of the sourounding buildings in the little town is breath taking. Word has it that Michelle Obama has attended the show.
No pasa nada, which translates as No worries, is the motto of this city and with good reason. This city is a beautiful, relaxed yet event filled town that you MUST visit in your lifetime. With cultural food, an exciting night life, and friendly people you are sure to have a good time on the coast of Spain. Just hours away from other exciting cities of Madrid, Barcelona and Seville, Granada has a perfect coastal location.
Granada is one of the most under-rated cities in Spain! It’s so full of history and they still honor the free tapas tradition so dining is incredibly delicious and cheap. If you’re coming from Sevilla, you can take the bus for about 10 euros. GoEuro is a great app to utilize while traveling around Europe because you can compare taxi, train, bus and plane fares.
Don’t pay for a walking tour, there’s a free walking tour held every day at 11am.
If you’re looking for some adventure you can do the Nevada hike which even includes waterfalls. If you love a great massage, I had the best spa experience of my life at the Hammam Al Andulas Arab baths.
The “must see” places include the Alhambra (book a few weeks ahead of time), plaza Nueva, Granada cathedral and the sacromonte gypsy caves.
