Other than the critters, I felt safe in the jungle of Guanacaste, Costa Rica. I stayed at two hotels – Andaz and Planet Hollywood. I recommend Andaz hands down. I wouldn’t recommend Planet Hollywood (PH) only because it had a cruise ship feel and the food seemed more like food court quality. PH is geared towards families. The pool was overcrowded and you are bombarded on the beach with people selling stuff.
Andaz, on the other hand, is a luxury hotel. Food and alcoholic beverages were fresh. No processed syrups or flavors in the drinks.
Breakfast at Andaz was an amazing buffet. The property has several restaurants including one accessible by brief boat ride to another part of the coast.
There’s not much beach to relax on. While there, I rode jet skis to a cave one day and took a taxi to ATV riding at The Congo Trail another day. Did yoga outside with a breathtaking view and had a massage that was life changing. Took a cocktails class where we learned about making everything from fresh ingredients. They also had an empanada making class. Did an educational hike, learning about an extinct group of indigenous people who lived in the area.
I never got used to the critters. There was a new guest in the room each time I returned for the night. One day there was a tarantula, not far from my room. On the last night, in one of the restaurants, a tarantula crawled across the floor. I was always on guard, looking around and could never quite relax.
The property is pretty secluded so there is no walking off the property or close nightlife.
The people were lovely and really encouraged me to learn and speak Spanish. At times, only speaking to me in Spanish so I could learn.
I would love to return but can’t get past the bug life.
I have visited Guanacaste twice. Once for my honeymoon in September 2013 and a return trip May 2024 for my husband’s 40th birthday.
Our first stay was at the RIU Palace. Beautiful resort with great buffet selections and the beach access was amazing. We didn’t plan any excursions in advance but did zip lining (AMAZING!) and a party boat. We were extremely lucky to be able to see a humpback whale and her calf. The calf swam directly under our catamaran. I didn’t wake up early enough but some guest told us about the sea turtles making their run for the sea as well.
When we returned we did the Presidential Suite at Secrets Guanacaste. Secrets was a very nice resort but know if you choose to stay there it is very hilly, like steep hills. They had golf carts running constantly for guests as parts of the resort were far away. The pool was nice. The bartenders were very generous and the food was okay. We did a private charter for his birthday through Manta Ray Sailing Company. Our boat was the Bali and we had a travel group of 10. They coordinated travel to and from Marina Flamingo. The only disappointment was the food. They didn’t prepare enough for everyone to have equal portions, and considering we were drinking and out with them for 6+ hours it was slightly disappointing. The experience was very nice and the staff was friendly.
We did a private country tour, airport transfers, and zip lining through Frank the Tank Tours. Since I bundled multiple tours, he did offer a discount to the group. The guide was great on the private tour and we learned so much about their culture. I got a pineapple for a local vendor off the side of a road where she cut it fresh with a machete. I wanted the authentic tour experience and told my guide, take me to places you go. We saw beautiful waterfalls, nature preserves with tons on animals including sloths, monkeys, frogs, snakes, etc., got to try some Costa Rican coffee, mud baths, sulpher springs, and more.
This is one of the few countries I have made a return visit and highly recommend traveling here. The locals are very friendly, they don’t haggle you in local markets, and there is so much to do.
I traveled to Costa Rica in 2015 for a wedding. we stayed at the Riu Guanacaste. To this day, it is hands-down one of my favorite places that I’ve visited. The people were so nice. The hotel was nice. We had so much fun on our excursions. The food was good. The vibe was good. It was all in all a great trip. We went horseback riding up a mountain and then we zip lined back down. We rode ATV’s. We did the clay baths in the mountains. We did a crazy ass slide down a mountain that was very jet2Holiday, but it was still very fun all in all. We went on a boat cruise to see Monkey Head island. I had an amazing time. I’m not sure how much things have changed now, but 10 years ago it was a great place to visit. As I am currently looking to move out of the US, I was considering Costa Rica as one of the places that I might move, but I have seen some pushback from the locals so again, I don’t know how the energy has changed there since then, but it still is one of my favorite trips that I’ve had.
We stayed at the Dreams Las Mareas Resort in the Guanacaste region. It is a resort beautiful. We were there for a conference so I really can’t give a cost breakdown because our group had a discount. There were no issues traveling in Costa Rica while black. The food was delicious, my favorite dish was the pinto gallo (Costa Rican rice and beans). I ate that everyday for breakfast. I primarily stayed on the resort and had a beach day. I opted out of excursions, I just wanted to relax during my vacation. Everyone that I interacted with was friendly. I would definitely go back to Costa Rica.
We spent one week in Costa Rica last summer and it was absolutely beautiful. We stayed at Riu Guanacaste which was an all inclusive. The views were amazing but the accommodations were dated and the food was meh. The best food we had was on an excursion to a brewery and that food was incredible. We would definitely go back but not stay at the same place.
Costa Rica in general is one of my favorite places. The country has one of the most diverse landscapes, from beach to volcanos and rain forest, etc. Costa Ricans are very friendly and welcoming of Black people. I never felt out of place. 10/10 Recommend. The only thing I would say could be better is the food. I’m not a fan.
In the summer of 2021 I travelled to Guanacaste, Costa Rica and LOVED IT. We stayed at the Planet Holywood, yes it’s an all inclusive BUT that doesn’t mean we stayed behind the gates! While in Costa Rica we booked a private tour of the area, saw a volcano, explored swinging bridges and plush flora, basked in hot springs, and ate local cuisine. We also rode horses, jet skied, and felt totally at home! Everyone we encountered was warm and welcoming. We can’t wait to go back!
