I went to Ejutla in Oaxaca, Mexico for a beverage photography program and had a great time! Most of the trip was out in the country and we stayed on the property owned by Banhez Mezcal. The accommodations were humble, clean and comfortable. I actually loved being in the countryside more than being in the bustling downtown area.
I stayed in the main downtown area for my final night and was still pleased with the experience overall. Great food options and very gastronomy-forward city! I hated my Airbnb though. It was a beautiful room, but located inside this hotel that felt abandoned (creepy). And it was during Dia De Los Muertos, so even more creepy.
As a black woman, I felt safe and comfortable with the locals. People were friendly and I didn’t feel like I was sticking out like a sore thumb even though I was often the only black person.
Overall, Oaxaca feels safe and like any other major city. Exercise normal precaution and you’ll have a good time. This wouldn’t be my first pick for places to travel, but it certainly was a nice time nonetheless.
