I’ve stayed in the Kingston/Harriman/Rockwood TN area for almost a year while traveling with my husband (white) in our RV for his job. For a predominantly white, rural area it hasn’t been bad. I’ve noticed a few stares when we’ve been out together, not so much when I’m alone. I did make weekly daytime Walmart trips by myself and didn’t have any issues. I’m an introvert anyway but the majority of people I encountered were friendly and I was never bothered. Very nice staff at the RV park on the lake, and there were just a few others of US staying there. I made it a point to speak to and smile at other black people I came across, because I didn’t see very many or any a lot of times. We don’t go out much at night, but went to a crowded event at a local restaurant once; I was only one of three black people, so it did feel weird. No issues though. My husband is stocky and muscular and people mistake him for a cop sometimes, so there’s that. It’s a nice area, not many casual or upscale restaurants; gotta drive to Faragut or Knoxville for that. And I noticed A LOT of the Mexican restaurants don’t season their food here, probably to appease the majority palate.
