Montserrat’s history begins a long time before British and Irish settlers came to the island. However, reminders of slavery and rebellions still live on the island. The area Cudjoe Head is a large reminder of all the Cudjoe’s that sacrificed themselves for the freedom of the slaves on the island. Many planters hung these “rebels” from trees and severed heads were left as consequence reminders to other slaves. This history is also exhibited in the masquerade dances that take place at Montserratian festivals and celebrations.
Rich in sugar cane and other natural resources Montserrat was and is beneficial to the UK as part of the common wealth and one of the few remaining Overseas British territories. Although the monarchy is plastered on the currency be sure to convert money before arriving. Eastern Caribbean (EC) Dollars is the currency used on the island. Western union will likely be your best bet to send/receive money if needs be. The beautiful beaches on the north side of the island serve as an excellent background to “lime” and enjoy the views of the ocean .
Locals are friendly and helpful and will point you in the right direction if you “look lost”. They will tell you stories of who you favour, history of the island and of the sweetest mango they’ve ever picked.

Note the island is sometimes affected by hurricanes and debris from the (active) volcano. The southern side of the island was affected by an eruption in the 1990s, it is referred to as the Exclusion zone.

So, I’ve just returned from a month in Montserrat with the family and guys… wow.
We invited my sons friend to come with us, and he had an incredible experience. If you’re looking for a place to relax and not commercialize like other islands, then Montserrat is the place to visit.

Firstly, you’ve got to see Plymouth. It’s this eerie, beautiful ghost town buried by a volcano. Walking through, it feels like you’ve stepped into a history book. It’s a real-life lesson on nature’s power. The view from the MVO (Montserrat Volcanic Observatory) is stunning. However, when you see the share devastation of Plymouth, you have no choice but to respect nature’s power.

Food-wise? Ever heard of Goat Water? Think of the best stew you’ve ever had and then up the game by a mile. We were hunting down places to get more of it during our trip! However, we loved our dining experiences, from Nadine’s takeout to Summer Breezes restaurant at Little Bay.

If you’re into hiking, Montserrat’s got you. There are these lush green trails that’ll both challenge you and reward you with these crazy-good views. And the beaches… oh, man! Imagine your usual beach but with jet-black sand. It’s like something out of a postcard. Perfect for chilling with a good book or just soaking in the sun. My kids had the opportunity to swim with the turtles at Woodlands Beach, and what an incredible experience they had.

Honestly, if you’re thinking about where to head next, give Montserrat a try. It’s got a bit of everything, and I promise, it’s like nowhere else you’ve been before.

If you’re thinking of heading to Montserrat, here are some friendly tips based on our experience:
. Local Currency: While the Eastern Caribbean Dollar is the official currency, US dollars are often accepted. Still, it’s handy to have some local money for smaller establishments or local businesses.
. Local Eats: Beyond Goat Water, try other local dishes like roti or saltfish. And always ask locals for their favourite spots; you’ll discover gems not in the guidebooks.
. Local Etiquette: Montserratians are known for their friendliness. A simple greeting or ‘thank you’ in passing is common and appreciated.
. Transport: Public transport is limited, so consider renting a car to explore the island at your own pace. Just remember to drive on the left!

Lastly, dive into the experience with an open heart. Engage with the locals, learn their stories, and take every opportunity to soak in the unique culture and environment of Montserrat. Enjoy!

This is one wholesome and enriching country. The population is only 5k and there is almost no crime. Monsterrat is well known for its black sand beaches and Soufrière Hills volcano which destroyed its capital Plymouth and is pretty active. The locals are extremely friendly and getting around this country is a breeze, however you would have to hire a taxi to get most places and or rent a car. The only white sand beach is Rendevous Beach and you have to hike to it, over a small mountain basically. There are awesome places to eat like The Attic 2 local fare, a small cozy restaurant, however a more upscale restaurant is Olveston House which used to be the home of Sir George Martin, which sits on palatial grounds with a swimming pool and the food is oooh so delectable. The island is very tiny and everyone pretty much knows everyone else but its so relaxing and noncommercial. We stayed in an Airbnb on a mango vista and ate Julie mangoes everyday, which was awesome. Getting there with a small plane that sits only 7 or taking the ferry. The ferry runs only once a day and not in inclement weather, so take your pick. We went in July and that’s the beginning of hurricane season so we flew. Go and have awesome trip, I will definitely be back.
