I stayed at Willow Grove Suites during my trip to Philadelphia, and the experience was overall comfortable, but with a few things future travelers should know, especially for my Traveling While Black community. The room was clean and the area felt safe, but there was no room service, and breakfast was just okay, so it’s helpful to plan your meals in advance.
If you’re craving good Haitian food while in the city, Philadelphia has several great options. Joyeuse Bakery and Restaurant, Gou Restaurant, and MOJO Haitian Restaurant are all popular spots with flavorful dishes and welcoming staff. They’re perfect if you want a taste of home or want to support Haitian-owned businesses during your visit.
Transportation can get a little pricey depending on where you’re staying and where you’re heading, so budgeting for Uber/Lyft is smart. Willow Grove Suites is best for travelers looking for a quiet stay outside the busier parts of the city. If you prefer more amenities or a full-service hotel experience, you may want to compare other options.
As a Black traveler, I felt safe during my stay, but I do think the hotel could improve its service to match the value. Overall, it was a decent base for exploring Philadelphia’s food, culture, and Caribbean community.
Philly is a great place to visit or live and it’s filled with dope activities, history, and nightlife. If your into nature and trail walks Bartram Gardens, FDR Park, Schuylkill River Park, Clark Park, Fairmount Park are the places to be. FDR Park from April to October every Sat has an Asian Market where you can buy different kinds of cooked food, drinks, plants etc. On Sundays is the Latino Market. Malcolm X Park has a Black Owned Farmers market every 2nd and 4th Sat where you can support black owned businesses that sell food, jewelry, clothing etc.
Love history? Go downtown or City Hall where you’ll learn about the American Revolution and can view the Liberty Bell. African American Museum, The Franklin Institute, and Museum of Illusions are a great place to go especially if you’re traveling with family.
Here for the food? Philly has everything. Best place to get a cheesesteak is the Papi store, corner store or bodega whatever you want to call it. The proper way to order a cheesesteak is salt, pepper, ketchup, mayo, fried onions that is the standard. Now I prefer adding pickles to mine to cut through the richness. Maybe a mushroom from time to time but whatever tickles your fancy. And for the love of God don’t put cheez whiz on your cheese steak, that’s an abomination. If the Papi store is closed Max’s on Germantown Ave near Broad and Erie or Taste Cheesesteak Bar if you’re downtown are the only places to go. Cleavers in a pinch but they used seeded rolls which is a tad annoying since everyone else uses soft long non seeded Amoroso rolls. Pat’s and Geno’s are disgusting and nobody from Philly eats there just tourists. South Philly and Chinatown are the best places for Asian food. North Philly is really good for soul food and seafood. Sy’s Palace is the best for soul food and they’re halal. There’s a huge Muslim population here so if you have food restrictions you won’t have a problem finding a place to eat or find beef bacon. West and SW has a bunch of dope African spots. Abyssinia is my personal favorite. Kensington is where you go if you want authentic Latin food but there are some really good spots around the Italian Market area in South Philly on 9th St.
As far as safety is concerned pay attention to your surroundings, don’t flash wads of money or expensive items and use discernment.
You can visit Philly all year round as there is always something to do even in the winter. Christmas Village and Ice Skating downtown are great activities. In January is restaurant week where you can typically get a 3 course meal for 20-50 bucks.
Philadelphia has great food, tons of free things to do, and a lot of history. It’s an extremely walkable city. There were a lot of us everywhere so I felt comfortable. The organic store downtown had free cups of water for anyone! I thought that was cool. I was there for work and enjoyed myself immensely. The urban farmer had great food.
Been living in Philadelphia for 3 years now. I really enjoy the city especially since growing up in a small town. Crime has its moments but I’ve personally never seen any harm my way.
We absolutely loved it here. Stayed over Juneteenth 2023. The culture and vibe were fantastic. The room was comfortable and the breakfast was wonderful. Got to meet and chat with the owner and also the chef. Loved spending my black dollars at this great Black owned B&B.
All I can say is if you are going to Philly, this site is a must visit. https://www.phillyexperiences.com. I bought the Ultimate Guide to Black Philadelphia and it was the best and cheapest investment $7. Every place I visited was Black Owned from my AirBnB (historical landmark @xolaoasis) to delicious restaurants to places to shop. Each experience was a beautifully curated adventure to remember. I attended a Black History walk tour found on AirBnB experience.
Philadelphia – the city of brotherly love and sisterly affection. Well upon first look, it’s pretty hard to find that love. Let’s face it, Philly is a tough city – the people, the sports, the language (lol someone’s going to call you a Dickhead at some point). Yet underneath this tough exterior lies a magnificent city, filled with beautiful landscapes, historical venues, and superb cuisine. Some of my favorites includes a power walk along Kelly Drive, the black history tour that highlights Richard Allen’s church- Mother Bethel, and a cheesesteak from Kobe Bryant’s favorite place Larry’s. I believe Philly has a lot of heart, and these are a few places that show the love and affection this city was nicknamed for.
I am originally from Philadelphia it’s a great location of great City to visit The Nightlife is awesome that is a club located downtown called The Library also is the club called uptown 57 it’s another great spot as well. The best night to go out and leave two spots on Friday night and Saturday night the atmosphere is great adult crowd 21 and over get in the music is R&B and Hip Hop yeah a little bit of house music too as well and this both of these spots are really upscale Club no t-shirts no jeans good to see you there.
Philadelphia is a great city to get great food, drinks, and a ton of history. The African American Museum of Philadelphia is an interactive museum with rotating exhibits highlight Black culture. There are often free events going on in the summer. Don’t forget to visit Mother Bethel AME Church which is not to far from the museum.
I enjoy traveling to Philly. Of course, the food is great! I enjoy tasting all the different cheesesteaks! That alone makes the trip! It always feels like home when I travel there no matter where I go. The nightlife is also plentiful and always exciting.
Took a roadtrip to Philly for 4th of July. My family and I went to a parade and a saw the liberty bell for free. There was a free concert in the park (Pitbull was there) and a fireworks show. Took an audio guide tour of the state penn ($14) and saw Al Capone’s cell. I enjoyed hearing the commentary. Waljed around the downtown area on a self guided graffiti tour. The China Town area had the worst smells. Bought rolled ice cream and a watermelon shake in China Town. Stopped for pics by the LOVE sign. My nieces enjoyed playing in the water fountains. I was able to get nice photos of them there. Went to Genos and Pats. Did not care for either. The good food is located in the reading terminal market. There are multiple shops and restsurants. I tried the cheesecake from Termini Brothers. It was okay. There is a really good soul food restaurant in there. The watermelon sweet tea, yams, cornbread, and chicken was delicious. Afterwards, we went to Hershey Park. It has a waterpark as well. Even though ourside was HOR, the water was COLD. I only went on one water slide, because the water was freezing. The next day, we went to the Hershey factory. We enjoyed making our own candy bar, learning about chocolate making, and the 3D show. I would go back to Hershey in low season. The next day, we went to the Amish Village. We learned about typical Amish life, toured a home, fed farm animals, and went on a tour of the community to observe the Amish. It was very informative and I had a good time.
